HEAVY STORMS IN AUSTRALIA
♦_— SHIPPING AND RAIL SERVICES DELAYED SYDNEY, January 19. Heavy weather is prevailing on the north coast of New South Wales. Many ships are sheltering. Similar weather off the Queensland coast caused a mishap to the Burns, Philp Company's ship Montoro, which is on her, way to New Guinea. The crew effected repairs and the vessel is due in Townsville to-morrow. The Montoro's steering sear was damaged and an SOS message was sent out, but later the steamer advised that repairs- had been effected and that she was proceeding northAerial services between Townsiville, Brisbane, and Sydney were cancelled to-day. I A cyclone on the north coast w3s j followed by torrential rains, which • threaten to cause extensive flooding in southern Queensland and the Northern Rivers districts in New South Wales. The Tweed river broke its banks and spread over miles of canefields and invaded the main street of Murwillumbah. There is a foot of water in many business premisesA washout occurred on the railway near Kyogle, and express trains between Sydney and Brisbane were delayed. '
