MR HARRY BRIDGES ATTACKED
♦ CRITICISM BY MAYOR OF PORTLAND COST OF LABOUR DISORDERS ON PACIFIC COAST (Received January 20, 10 p.m.) ~ NEW YORK, January 19. The Mayor of Portland, Oregon (Mr J. K. Carson), testifying before the Senate Commerce Committee, expressed annoyance with Mr Harry Bridges,, the Pacific waterfront leader, whom he described as an Australian alien." . He said Mr Bridges appeared in Portland several times and criticised the city's government. Since Mr Bridges was not an American citizen he had no right to do so. Labour disorders in- the shipping industry had cost Portland 1,000,000,000 dollars during the last three years. ___—.
