During the last few weeks the Maori guides at Whakarewarewa have been kept continuously busy conducting sightseers round the thermal region. As an indication of the heavy extent of the tourist traffic to the district this summer, it was stated, by Guide Bella that never before in her experience as a guide had she seen more visitors to the area than during the last few weeks. The eagerness of rabbits to sample young trees planted at-Oreti Sands, near Invercargill, was referred to by Cr. A. W. Jones at a recent meeting of the Invercargill City Council. "We have had men poisoning and trapping them," he said, "and we thought we had beaten them when we put a rabbit-proof fence round the trees. We have, however, actually seen them jumping over the fence." "They must be trained rabbits," said a councillor. Although entries for the National Flower Show will not close until this evening, the organising committee expects that the exhibition will be the best yet held in Christchurch. The ecretary, Mr P. C. Browne, said last evening that he had received gladiolus entries yesterday from a grower in Clyde, in Central Otago, and that there were several entries from places in Otagp and South Canterbury.
