SOCIAL AND PERSONAL

Mrs J. Barrie Martin and Miss Robinson (Wellington), who were the guests of the Misses Hassell (“Carshalton,” North street), have returned home. Miss Wade (Wai-iti road) has returned from a visit to Dunedin.

Mr and Mrs C. G. Bryan King (Sealy street) returned yesterday from a trip to the North Island. Mrs F. M. Riley (Timaru Creek, Lake Hawea) is visiting her mother, Mrs C. A. Paterson (Sefton street). Mrs J. M. Ritchie (Cheviot) is staying with her mother, Mrs W. H. Orbell (“The Levels”).

Mr? G, H. Cossins (Stafford street) is visiting Christchurch. Mrs Bennett, wife of Surgeon-Lieutenant Bennett, of H.M.S. Leith, is in her flat Miss F. Reading and Miss Betty Reading, who are staying with Mrs Walter Raymond (Park lane), will leave to-day for Wellington. Mrs Trevor Thomas and her children (Ashburton) are staying at Stutchbury House. Dr. and Mrs G. H. Ussher and the Misses Esme and Shirley Ussher (Sefton street), who have been on a holiday at Lake Wanaka, have returned home.

BLENHEIM NEWS

Mrs Terence Watts (“The Delta”) was hostess at an enjoyable afternoon party recently. The lounge was effectively decorated with bowls of zinnias and the tea table with roses and pansies.

Those present were Mesdames J. Hay (Timaru), J. H. Wadworth, R. G. Scott, B. Malcolm (Napier), Vesey Robinson, and G. Mtichell, Misses I. Rutherford, Malcolm (2), Milne (Wellington), and B. Hay (Timaru). Misses M. Weld (“Flaxbourne”), W. Davies (“Ngaio Downs”), D. Waddy (“The Waterfalls”), and Margaret Churchward are spending a holiday at Queen Charlotte Sound. Mr and Mrs H, Skinner (Dunedin) are visiting Mr and Mrs W. T. Churchward.

Miss A. Cookson (Wellington) is visiting Queen Charlotte Sound. Miss M. Goodson (Wellington), who has been visiting Blenheim, has returned home. Mrs B. Malcolm and Misses Malcolm (2),.wh0 are the guests of Mrs R. Scott (Muller road), will return to Napier this week.

Mr and Mrs J. <H. Wadworth and family (“Brancott”) are visiting Dartmoor, Queen Charlotte Sound.

Mrs C. M. Pickthall (London),' who has been spending several weeks with Sir Harold and Lady Beauchamp, in Wellington, is now visiting the Hermitage, Mount Cook, and later will go to the West Coast. The weekly flag “500” drive at Latimer Hall last night attracted many Messrs C. T. Lascelles and J. H. Davies acted as masters of ceremonies. The prizewinners were:—Mrs Cox, Messrs Bell and Dowling (first prizes), Miss Smith, Messrs J. H. Ladvin and H. Bowden (second prizes), Mr R. Evans, Miss J. Soanes, and Mrs E. Soanes (third prizes).

Miss I. M. Jamieson and Mrs Donald Mclntosh have taken Miss Mildred Trent’s house in Merivale during her absence in Australia. Miss Frances Mowat (Blefiheim) is the guest of Mrs G. Sage, Governor’s Bay. Miss Beatrice McGrath, who travelled to Blenheim by air, to visit Mrs A. R. Wooding, and later Miss Muir, Motueka, has returned to Christchurch.

Mr and Mrs A. S. Nickolls (Rangiora) have returned from a visit to Auckland ahd the Waitomo Caves.

Miss Patty Hook (Oamaru) has been visiting her aunt, Mrs Hugh Le Lievre, “Mount Desmond,” Akaroa.

Misses Joan Butler (Dunedin) and Wanda Miller (Nelson) are the guests of Mrs C. Innes, Akaroa. Miss N. Haylock (Akaroa) is spending a holiday in South Canterbury. Mrs G, I>. Mclntosh (Fisherman’s Bay, Akaroa) i$ visiting her mother, Mrs J. Brown, St. Martins. Miss K. Redfern (Christchurch) is staying with Miss Averill Mclntosh, at Fisherman’s Bay. Mrs E. M. May (Akaroa), accompanied by her two daughters, is visiting her sister, Mrs Claude Watkins, Arthur’s Pass. Mrs Jennings and Misses Margaret and Joan Jennings (Tinwald), are staying at “The Glen,” Akaroa. Dame Maria Ogilvie Gordon, who has travelled out from England to attend the international conference of women to be held' in Sydney during the hundred and fiftieth anniversary celebrations, has advised Dominion officers of the New Zealand National Council of Women that she will be unable to accept their invitation to visit New Zealand after the conference, owing to pressure of work for international relations.

Last night representatives of the Friday Night Club gathered on the Christchurch railway station to wish “bon voyage” to Miss Mildred Trent, Dominion president of the National Council of Women, who left to connect with the Wanganella, which will leave Wellington to-day for Sydney. Miss Trent will represent the women of New Zealand at the international conference of women to be held in Sydney during the hundred and fiftieth anniversary celebrations, and during her stay will be the guest of the New South Wales Committee, arranging the conference. She will stay at Springfield road, Potts Point,
