RESIGNATION AFTER LONG SERVICE

Tributes To Work Of Mr C. W. Hervey

The long and efficient service to the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society of Mr C, W. Hervey, secretary of the society, who has resigned his position after 24 years, was praised by members at the meeting of the council of the society last evening, Mr Hervey’s resignation was accepted with regret. Mr Hervey said that it was a great wrench to sever his connexion with the society after so long a time. He had derived a great deal of pleasure from his association with the many members of the council of the society during the years, and with the many friends he had made among sportsmen generally. After discussion with the members of his family he had decided that it would be in his own interest to give up the position. In the coming year he would have to carry extra responsibilities in his work for another organisation, and as he felt that he would not be able to give the society the service he had given in the past, he believed it was his duty to resign. He would be very pleased to assist his successor in any way. He appreciated the assistance that had been given in difficult times by the president (Mr G. L. Pomfret-Dodd). Mr Pomfret-Dodd said that Mr Hervey had been given every opportunity to reconsider his decision. However, he had reaffirmed it. Mr Hervey had closely watched the interests of the society for many years. He had had an arduous task to perform and had done it well. He deserved the highest tribute. Notwithstanding anything in the past there was not and never had been anything in the nature of bad blood.

The vice-president (Mr C. H. Lawrence) said that few people taking part in public affairs had given the faithful and satisfactory conduct of the work they were charged with for so long a period as Mr Hervey and retained the general goodwill of those they were associated with as Mr Hervey had done. Twenty-five years was half a lifetime. He hoped the council of the society would mark its appreciation of his services by some material contribution so that in future he would be able to remember with pride his association with the society. Mr Lawrence moved that the council of the society accept with regret Mr Hervey’s resignation; that it place on record its deep appreciation of his long and faithful service for nearly 25 years; that he he asked to continue in his position until the end of the financial year, and that he then be allowed to retire with six months’ leave on full pay. This motion was seconded by Mr G. Robinson and, after other members had paid a tribute to Mr Hervey’s work, it was carried
