COTTAGE GARDEN COMPETITION

FIRST JUDGING FINISHED

Only four entries were received for the best cottage garden competition conducted by the West Coast Horticultural Society. The first judging is finished and the final judging will be carried out towards the end of next month.

The competition is run on lines similar to those on which the private gardens competition is run in Christchurch. A cup has been given by Mr F. A. Kitchingham, the society’s patron, to be competed for in this competition. Entries are confined to Greymouth.

HOKITIKA SCHOOL

JUBILEE

FINAL ARRANGEMENTS MADE

A meeting of the executive of the Hokitika State School Jubilee Committee was held on Monday evening. Mr A. C. Armstrong presided. The reception committee reported that it had completed its arrangements for the entertainment of the guests on the afternoon of the reception, while the procession committee reported a long list bf decorated vehicles and tableaux that would take part. It was decided to make a display of school photographs and souvenirs, together with the jubilee cake, which is being made in the form of a model of the school.

The Railways Department wrote requesting a guarantee for the special train from Christchurch requested by the committee, but it was decided to get into touch with the Corsair Bay Club, requesting it to arrange for one of its special trains during that weekend, to arrive in Hokitika in time for the beginning of the celebrations. It was renorted by the chairman that the school committee had received advice from the Railways Department that it could not grant a train for the proposed picnic to Runanga on February £1 An alternative date will be sugge®ed to the department.
