ADDINGTON MARKET

heavier entries

GENERAL drop in values

In practically every section of stock there were larger entries at yesterday’s Addington market. As a result there was a general easing in values. The principal decline was in the fat sheep section, in which double the usual numbers came jtafward. Values eased for wethers by about 2s 6ci a head and for heavy ewes hy up to 3s 6cl. Company buyers kept the market steady at export rates for light sheep. Fat lamb cased in sympathy with the export schedule by from Is 6d to 2s a head. Fat cattle attracted a very heavy nenning, and values came down by 2s 6d to 3s Od per 1001 b. As in the fat sheep and fat lamb section the quality of the fat cattle was not up to normal. About 10,000 store sheep were penned, 80 per cent, of them being wether lambs. These sold easier than last week by Is a head, but they were nevertheless one of the strongest sections of the market. Few adult ewes wore forward, and those that were evoked little interest, and ewe lambs were not sought after. Fat pigs declined in value

STORE SHEEP The entry in the store sheep section was the largest of the season so far, comprising approximately 10,000 head, of which up to about Bboo were wether lambs. A fair proportion were well grown sorts, with several lines outstanding for condition and wool quality. Generally the market for wether lambs was a shade easier than it was a week ago, but considering the size of the penning the sale was a very satisfactory one. The top priced pen was 19s 9d, for 217 sold from Mount Vernon Estate (Port Hills), the corresponding line last season sold at 25s 6d. Good-sized pens from Bowen Vale (Port Hills) sold at from 18s lid down to 18s. These were all good rape lambs. Others made from 16s to 17s 6d, and backward and small from 13s 6d to 15s. Some ewe lambs from the same properties sold under indifferent competition, buyers showing much less activity for this class. The best line of 200 from Mount Vernon sold at 21s 6d and others from Bowen VMe at 19s 3d. The strongest feature of the market were young adult wethers. A small pen of 49 realised 265. and other good-sized pens 23s to 23s 7d. There were about 1500 adult wethers penned, and prices were practiclaly unchanged from those of last week. The few ewes forward were ordinary sorts and there was a dragging inquiry for them. Representative sales were as follows, the lambs being wethers unless otherwise stated Lambs —166 at 17s 3d, 92 cull at 14s 9d, 258 at 17s to 17s lid, 239 at 17s 6d to 18s Id, 74 cull at 13s 6d, 70 cull at 11s 2d, 87 at 17s. 191 at 16s 7d, 162 at 15s 7d, 88 at 15s. 91 at 17s 4d 269 at 15s 9d to ISs Hd. 95 ewe at 17s Id, 91 at 15s lOd, 361 at 14s 3d, 89 at 17s 6d, 172 at 14s Id, 79 at 17s Id. 168 at 18s 7d, 49 at 13s, 90 at 12s 9d, 181 at 13s Hd. 91 at 18s Hd. 81 at 18s Hd, 160 ewe at 18s 3d, 162 at 16s, 80 at 18s 2d, 89 at 16s 7d, 88 at 11s 4d, 140 at 17s Bd, 80 at 15s 6d, 83 at 16s 9d, 92 at 17s 2d, 90 at 12s 6d. 240 at 18s Bd, 56 at 14s, 83 at 17s Bd, 115 at 14s 2d, 79 at 15s; 264 at 16s 3d, 52 at 15s sd. 80 at 18s 4d, 81 at 18s 2d, 92 at 16s 4d, 88 at 16s Bd.-78 at 15s 3d 77 at 18s 3d. 100 at 17s 3d, 142 at 16s, 88 at 16s 9d, 187 at 14s 7d, 80 at 10s Bd, 75 at 13s lOd, 75 at 13s 9d, 74 at 13s Bd. 20 at 11s 2d. 217 at 19s 9d, 178 at 17s 6d, 97 at 16s Bd. 87 at 17s 9d. 200 ewe at 21s 6d, 194 ewe at 19s 6d, 107 m.s. at 15s 7d. Ewes—43 (and 32 lambs) at 13s lOd, 38 (31 lambs) at Hs, 19 two-tooth at 235, 25 at 21s. FAT LAMBS As a result principally of the recent | freezing workers’ award, providing for 'tvicreased wages, it was expected that the lamb schedule would be reduced, and this proved to be the case at-yesterday's market. Buyers operated on a basis of per lb for best grade. Prices dropped by Is 6d to 2s a head, and most of the better quality was secured by butchers. Butchers, as a matter of fact, secured the bulk of the offering; exporters securing only odd pens. The entry comprised 1300 head compared with 1750 last week, and the quality was only fair. ■•Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., sold; — 'On account of J. F. FAT SHEEP The small entries and the good prices Juling at recent sales were responsible ‘W" a particularly heavy yarding, the number forward being approximately 7500 . head, as against 3600 last week. The entry Overflowed into the lamb pens. Good wethers were again scarce, but in spite of this Jhey sold at a drop of about 2s 6d a head on th£ rates of last week, lighter wethers a shade more. With the market comprising for the most part ewes, there was a sharp decline in the value for these, heavier sorts being down by a «ood 3s to 3s 6d a head. Light freezing ewes maintained recent values much better, due to the activity of company buyers, , ho secured a big share of the entry, tighter ewes were down by Is to Is 6d. The usual showing of prime weighty steers was absent, most of the steer class comprising

light and half-finished sorts. There were some good pens of heifers forward, also cows, but there were more light cows than at recent sales. With the much increased entry, the hot weather, the weaker prices for lamb and mutton, the market came back sharply on the good rates ruling for some time. It opened at up to 20s a head lower for all sorts, and although it Improved slightly for a brief spell later on It came back to lower rates than at the commencement. The easing ranged from 20s to 25s a head, the decline affecting all classes. A lot of the better class beef sold at round about 35s per 1001 b, and a few pens up to 37s 6d. There were some passings. Good prime beef ranged from 35s to 37s 6d per 1001 b, medium and heavy weight 33s to 355, ordinary down to 30s. and inferior down to 255.

STORTFORD LODGE

(ratss association tblsobak.) HASTINGS. January 19.

To-day's offering at Storlford Lodge did not produce any bright selling. Last week’s reduced price levels for lambs caused vendors to hold off, with the result that fewer than 4000 were penned. Most of the entries were ewe lambs, and were small and off high, hard country. They made from 15s to 19s. The woolly wether lambs offered gave little choice to buyers requiring good lines. Down cross pens in quite good store order brought to 17s 6d. Wethers met a much easier market, with selling difficult. Extra well-grown fat and forward brought to 24s 3d, and useful two-tooths from 19s to 20s 9d. Except for prime Down cross, ewes were down by 3s a head, fhe best pens making to 18s 3d. Butchers showed little Interest In the yarding, which was larger than last week. Most of the lambs offered were of second quality, and sold on a par with the freezing schedule. Fat cattle met with quiet selling. Ox beef was not on offer, and quality was plain. Best beef made 25s per 1001 b. Rough, aged, and unfinished were hard to trade at 205.. Prime heifers made to 27s 6d per 1001 b. BURNSIDE DUNEDIN, January 19. There was a general easing In the cattle and sheep sections at the Burnside sale to-day. Extra prime heavy bullocks made to £l9 2s 6d. prime £ls 7s 6d to £l7 7s 6d, medium and light £9 2s 6d to £ll 7s 6d, extra prime cows and heifers to £l3 2s 6d, prime £8 2s 6d to £lO 2s 6d, medium £7 2s 6d to £B, and light down to £4 7s 6d.
