M.A., LL.B., during a membership of some 22 years, from 1907 to 1921 as a representative of the yictoria Gollege graduates, and from 1930 to 1937 by appointment of the GovernVineht. As chairman of many committees, as treasurer 1916-21 and 1931-36, and as pro-Chancellor 1936-37, Mr von Haast devoted much time and thought to the work of university administration. During the last year he represented the university at _ the centenary, celebrations of the University of London and at the conference of universities of the Empire at Cambridge. “A graduate of Canterbury College, a former. member,, and chairman of the Victoria College Council, and earlier a member of the Canterbury College Board of Governors, and for a long period an examiner in law, he had a many-sided knowledge of university activities. His legal and business experience, coupled with the power of lucid and persuasive speech, gave added weight to the opinions he expressed; and his native fairness of mind was recognised by all. In Mr von Haast the Senate loses one who has done much for the advancement of higher education in New Zealand.”
