BOWLS

•♦— N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT FIFTEEN RINKS NOW LEFT IN FIVE YET UNDEFEATED (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) DUNEDIN, Januax-y 19. Twenty-nine rinks took part in postsectional play when the bowling tournament was continued to-day in perfect weather. After three rounds played under the automatic two life system, the number of rinks was reduced to 15, of which live still have two lives. The five two-lifers are those skipped by:— Aitchison (Caledonian). Thomson (Phoenix). Wilson (Llnwood). Britten (Sydenham). Foster (Caversham). Ten rinks are left with one life each, these being those skipped by Thompson (Balmacewan), Carswell (Taieri). Webster (Kaituna), Vcitch (West Harbour), Dowland (St. Kilda), Ferguson (Balmacewan), Tyrrell (Roslyn) (all of which represent local clubs). Piper (Maitai), Marks (Christchurch), and Bull (Hawera). In practically every case the two-life men went through the three rounds of post-sectional play with convincing victories, Thomson in particular having three good wins. His victims were Dowland (St. Hilda). Gagllardl (Edgeware). and Piper (Maitai). Gagliardi gained seven wins and one loss in section play but went out comparatively easily in the first two rounds to-day. Aitchison’s three wins included victories over Marks (Christchurch) and Tyrrell, the well-known Roslyn player. Wilson won his matches comfortably, and in no instance was extended. Foster and Britten each drew a bye and had played only two games. In the third round match Britten accounted for Veitch (West Harbour) 25-1 Gon the twentieth head after the local rink had the early advantange. Model of Accuracy One of the most Interesting games, although by no means the closest, was that in winch the veteran, W. Carswell, with one life, met Watts (Victoria) and won by the substantial margin of nine points oil the twentieth head. Carswell played brilliantly, his drawing shots being a model of accuracy, and he ran to a 15-1 lead on the eighth head. Against such a lead the visiting rink could do little. Although they drew up slightly in the middle of the game they had practically no chance from the beginning. Kaituna Green MORNING ROUND Longworth (St. Kilda) 18, Gagliardi (Edgeware) 15.
