RACING AND TROTTING

WELLINGTON RACES SECOND DAY OP 1 MEETING FIELDS AND PROSPECTS [From Our Own Reporter.] WELLINGTON. January 19. Fine weather is again promised for the second dav of the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting at Trcntham tomorrow. The following horses are likely to race well; — Munparoa High-weight; Red Sun. The Surgeon. Convivial. Trial Plate: Flame Queen, Lc TotjucT. Jewish Lad. January Handicap: Oratory. Valarnho, Alma. Camp Handicap: Rabble. Double Gift, Lazybones. Racing Club Handicap: Padishah, Cerne Abbas. Lowenberg. Nursery Handicap: Surmount. Ivar. Amigo. Metropolitan Handicap: Grey Honour, Lady Ina. Ben Braggie. Douro Cup; Studley Royal, Cricket, Salient Knight. The programme is as follows:

THE TRIAL PLATE PLAY ON’S. CHANCES DISCUSSED [By CARBINE.] Aucklanders present for the Wellington races are very keen on the chance of Play On in the Trial Plate to-day. His opponents are riot good, and if Play. Oil can realise northern expectations, he should have excellent prospects of winning. Padishah, winner of the Wellington Cup, is a master of weight, so there is no need -for anyone who ■ likes his chance of repeating Tuesday’s- success to be afraid of his rise to 8-6. The .Douro Cup often conceals, one of those elusive things styled “a rod in pickle.” There may be one in tomorrow’s field; but the well-backed division is sure to include Cricket, Tail Light, Good Sun, Lickem, Silver River, Wagner, Nightdress, and Quadroon. Several of these did not run on Tuesday; but Good Sun, Tail Light, and Nightdress all raced attractively, and should not be entirely discarded. The , Douro, Cup is one of the most important hack races in the country, and one of the hardest to win. A fine contest is expected to-day.

TURF GOSSIP

For a Spell Cerne Abbas, who was undoubtedly the unluckiest contestant in the Wellington Cup, suffered no ill effects, and is to start in the principal event at Trentham to-day. This will be her last race for this season, as it is considered that she has had a strenuous time since the early spring She will now be turned out, and present intentions are to get her ready for a trip to Sydney in the spring, when Royal Chief may accompany her.

Out of Action

Paper Slipper showed a return of his heel trouble after working at Trentham on Monday, and is not likely to race on Saturday unless there should be a good' fall of rain in the meantime.

Waiting for Saturday Although Dictate. Wild Chase, and Raeburn were not accepted for at Trentham to-day, they are to remain for Saturday’s programme.

South Island Purchases

South Island buyers operated fairly freely at yesterday’s yearling sale at Trentham, and the first youngster sold went to Mr J. R. McKenzie. This was a brother to Ringing Cheer and Gallant Fox, and appeared to be good buying at 325 guineas. Mr McKenzie had to go to 575 guineas for a brother to the Melbourne two-year-old winner Normal, and to a Stewards’ Handicap winner in Knockrin. This colt was started at 300 guineas, and bidding was confined to Mr McKenzie and an Australian commissioner. The Riccarton trainer, S. Barr, secured a wellgrown filly by Night Raid from Ilida, a half-sister to the speedy Dole, and P. T. Hogan had reason to be pleased with his purchase of a half-sister by Nightxnarch to Queen pf Song-

A Ringmaster for Riccartoa

Mr E. Hay re-entered the arena by securing the first of Ringmaster’s progeny to be offered to the public. This was a half-brother to Imposture and Elanage, and is closely related to Lysander, Variant, and Damaris. This coll also attracted Australian competition, and Mr Hay had to go to 850 guineas to secure him.

For Melbourne Mr G. J. Barton, of Dunedin, was a bidder on several lots, including a Limond—Waterwings colt. He retired at 900 guineas, and the colt was passed in at 950, but was taken at the reserve of 1000 guineas by Mr T. Impey, the owner of Round Up. Mr Barton’s first purchase was a half-brother by Ringmaster to the Dunedin-owned Royal Order. Later he secured the brother to his three-year-old Silver Bond, who has been a winner in Melbourne. This is a more attractive youngster than his relative, and seemed very reasonable at 225 guineas.

Another Attempt Dr. M. G. Louisson, who has not had the best of luck in his sale ring operations, paid the good price of 650 guineas for a colt by Beau Pere from Dignified, an imported mare by the Gainsborough horse Dignity. One of Dignified’s previous productions was Mazzini, but this colt could not be faulted. He comes from the same family as Heroic, Magpie, Rosscndale, Saucy Sue, and The Trump. Cuddle’s Relative Messrs Barlow Bros., of Christchurch, went to 450 guineas for a colt by Lord Quex from Squeeze, a sister to Cuddle and a half-sister to Padishah. The youngster will no doubt be trained at Trentham by H. B. Lorigan, who trains Settlement for the same owners. For Washdyke Mr W. J. Dore, owner of Top Row. secured a well-grown colt by Croupier fronfl Kippil Lee, a close relation of Arctic King, Rabbi, and Inflation. By some oversight Top Row was included in the race book at Trentham on Tuesday as still owned by Mr P. T. Hogan, and he had to race in Mr Hogan’s colours. He will be in his right colours to-day. Likes the Breed Mr C. N. Draper bought another of Lord Warden’s productions in a filly from the imported Anthem, who previously produced Crash, Lyrical, and Clangor, when owned by Mr V. Riddiford. Attracted Attention There was some keen competition for a colt by Royden from Helen Gold, a Paper Money mare formerly trained at Riccarton, and he fell to the bid of Miss M. C. Wilson, of Reefton, owner of Argentic, at 270 Interesting Purchases It is understood that the Beau Pere —Drama colt, and the Beau Pere—Barbarcan colt, purchased by Pyn.e, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., at yesterday’s sale gt Trentham, will be trained by F. D. Jones for Mr A. K. Firth, owner of Royal Chief. Private Sale The Hunting Song—Callisto colt, passed in yesterday for 700 guineas, was later purchased for 750 guineas by Mr W. A. lorns, of Martinborough, for whom he will be trained by J. H. Jefferd. A Tempting Offer An upstanding filly by Beau Pere from Phrosa was passed in at 1000 guineas at Trentham yesterday, and later her breeder, Mr G. F. Moore, refused an offer of 1250 guineas, which would have constituted the biggest price of the sale. Mr Moore would not consider less than 1500 guineas, and as this is not forthcoming, he decided to send the filly to Sydney to be trained for him by J. T. Jamieson. A LL KINDS OF STRAWS, SPORTS. TROTTING NOTES

Reminders

Acceptances for the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting will close today at 5 p.m. Acceptances for the Nelson Trotting Club’s meeting will close next Monday at 8 p.m. An Addition

The latest addition to J. L. Davidson's Addington team is the Southland pacer McGlusky, a gelding by Rey de Oro from a Logan Pointer mare. Last season McGlusky won one race in good style, and he gave promise of proving a useful winner, but he has since failed to perform prominently.

Slow Promotion Glen Travis has had several trainers since he first started racing, and he won his first race only recently after being taken over by S. A. Edwards. Since he has been at Addington he has responded weil to work, and ho Is probably more forward now than ever before. However, while he has a nice turn of speed, it has taken him a long time to leave the maiden classes, and he does not impress as a pacer likely to make much improvement.

Useful Pacer Waikari Jack, a winner at the recent Greymouth fixture, has done well in recent weeks, and bears a bright appearance. This pacer came under notice when he finished third in tfte New Zealand Champion Stakes, and his performance in that event stamped him as a good juvenile. He has not been a great time back in work after a long spell, and his forward condition is a credit to his trainer, J. Seibel. It is probable that Waikari Jack will compete at the Nelson Trotting Club’s meeting, where the classes will allow him to be well placed, and he should be seen to further advantage. Settling Down Recent track work would suggest that .Belle Grattan is settling down nicely at Addington, apd she is now becoming much easier to handle. This mare has the ability to hold her own in much stronger company than she is meeting in her present class, but her inclination to stand on the mark has prevented her from getting far in the handicaps. A good stayer, and speedy. Belle Grattan is taking a long time to gain reliableness, but a steady improvement can' be noted.

An Improvement Since he was taken over by G Mouritz last month, Moana Tama has raced three times, and on each occasion he has earned place money. At Timaru last week he was unlucky in the running to finish a close third, and the pleasing feature of his performance there was the manner in which be finished under pressure. He has always been regarded as a fine track worker, but he was beginning to be recognised as a poor racehorse. No fault can be found in his recent displays, however, and he appears certain to return to the winning list at an early date. Leading Trainer

The Takanini trainer F. J. Smith continues to maintain a high average of winners, and he is again on the high road for Dominion honours this season, his total to date being 21 wins and 27 minor placings for £4865 in stake money. King’s Warrior, with two successes, has proved the most profitable of his team with £llOO, and Crocus has registered four wins and Bexley Girl three. Cavan Chief, Ironside, and Musketeer have accounted for two races each, and Querida, Grattan Girl, Sandusky, Nervie’s Last, Real Red, and Mountain Flight have all won once. As the season is only half gone. Smith looks likely to have another highly successful year. Train Arrangements

For the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on Wednesday, January 26, a special train taking horses from Christchurch, Addington, Sockburn, Templeton, Dunsandel, Rakaia, Ashburton, and Timaru only, will leave Christchurch at 6.30 a.m., and arrive in Dunedin at 3.36 p.m. Accommodation for passengers will be provided on this train. The return train, taking horses and passengers for stations north of Oamaru, will leave Dunedin at 7.40 a.m. on Sunday, January 30, and will arrive at Christchurch at 5 p.m.

SATISFACTORY CLEARANCE

[From Our Own Reporter.]

WELLINGTON, January 19

The twelfth annual sale of thoroughbred yearlings was held at TTentham to-day before a large attendance. Buyers from all parts were in evidence, and although Australian interests were again strongly represented, and participated in the bidding for the most attractive lots. New Zealand buyers offered solid opposition, and several of the high-priced yearlings will remain in the Dominion. For the first time since the present national sales were inaugurated, a filly attained the honour of providing the' highest price—llso guineas—of the sale. This was for a brown filly by Beau Pere from Drama, a half-sister to Spiral. Another filly, a sister to Taurangi, realised 1000 guineas. Still another filly by Beau Pere from Phrosa was passed in at 1000 guineas, her breeder wanting 1500 guineas. The highest-priced colt was by Siegfried from the Limond mare Lilock, who realised 1050 guineas. A Limond— Waterwings colt fetched 1000 guineas, and but for carrying a scar as the result of an accident, would no doubt have topped the list. Limond was represented for the last time in the ring, and his progeny averaged 469 guineas. An interesting feature of the sale was the demand for the progeny of Foxbridge, by Foxlaw, and of Ringmaster, by Colorado, the latter taking Limond’s place, both being represented for the first time at Koatanui. One of the Foxbridge’s list realised 1000 guineas, and four of Ringmaster’s youngsters averaged 637 guineas. Of the 166 lots catalogued, there were several withdrawals, and 109 were sold, at an average of 274 guineas. Details are as follows:
