SHOOTING SEASON RESTRICTIONS

♦ NORTH CANTERBURY SOCIETY’S PROPOSALS Recommendations to the Minister for Internal Affairs about the seasons to be observed in the shooting of certain game birds, were approved by the Council of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society at its meeting last evening. Mr G. L. Pomfret-Dodd presided. , , The game committee s recommendation that the Minister for Internal Affairs should be urged to reimpose protection on Canadian geesee, was apPl ßecommended seasons for the following game birds, to be forwarded .to the Department of Internal Affairs, were approved as follows:—Black swan, two months. May 1 to June 30, limit of 15 birds a gun a day; grey duck, shoveller, and mallard, .two months, May 1 to June 30. 15 birds; paradise duck, eight days, from May 1 to May 8, five birds; pheasant, seven days, June 24 to £3O, three cock birds; godwit, three months. December 1 to February 21. 10 birds: Quail, two months. May 1 to June 30. 10 birds. It was decided to retain up to 50 brace of quail as breeding birds, and to inform societies inquiring for birds that none was available. The Ellesmere Land Drainage Board advised that it could not remit the rates on the society’s property. It was decided to support, at the conference of South Island Acclimatisation Societies to-day, a remit that a licence fee of 12s 6d should be provided for youths between the ages of 16 and 18, instead of a youth at the age of 16 having to move at one step from the boys’ licence fee of 5s to the full fee of 255. It was decided to bring up at the conference the questions of pond shooting, and the prohibition of automatic shotguns.
