Hugh Southern Hayes, aged 26, the driver of a car which crashed over a 800 feet drop on the Roloma hill, between Rotorua and Whakatanc on Sunday night, died this afternoon in the Rotorua Hospital. Hayes was pinned by the steering wheel, and suffered very severe head and internal injuries. Hayes was identified by a driving licence found in the car, and his identity was subsequently confirmed. His home is at Nukumaru, near Wailotara, where he was engaged in farming. Joseph Vance Viscoo, a timber worker, whom Hayes picked up as a passenger on the Parapara road, was also involved in the accident, but is making a satisfactory improvement in hospital. The boy was filling a toy engine operated by methylated spirits from a half-gallon can, when the spirit exploded. The lad’s clothing was set on fire, and before the flames could be extinguished he suffered severe burns on practically every part of his body and face. The explosion was of such force that the can, which was being handled in tho open air, was blown over Hie house. LEG FRACTURED WOMAN INJURED EN MOTOR COLLISION Miss Minnie Pepper, of 74 Bamford street, suffered a compound fracture of the left log when she was involved in a motor collision shortly after seven o’clock last evening. Miss Pepper was riding on the pillion-scat of a motorcycle when it came into collision with a motor-car at the corner of Ferry road and Moorhousc avenue. Miss Popper was taken to the Christchurch Public Hospital by Ihc St. John Ambulance, and laic last evening was reported to be making satisfactory progress.
