RUGBY PROTEST UNSETTLED

Result of Third Grade Competition SPECIAL COMMITTEE SET UP BY N.Z. UNION Although it is only about two months to the opening of the new football season, there is still a possibility that the decision of the Ashburton Rugby Union awarding the third grade competition to the Old Boys team may yet be upset. A special committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union has been constituted to settle a protest raised by the Methven Club, and should the protest be upheld by the committee, the competition will be won by the Metnven third grade team by half a point from Old Boys. The Methven Club’s protest was against the acceptance by the Ashburton Union of a last-minute withdrawal of the Old Boys' junior team from the competition. The club maintained that the junior team defaulted and should have been filled from Old Boys’ third grade team which, on the day in question, won the third grade competition with a lead of 1J total points from Methven’s third grade team. When Methven’s protest was first considered by the New Zealand Union a reply was received by the Ashburton Union supporting the club’s pro--test. The Ashburton Union again wrote to the parent body drawing attention to one of its rules which, u is considered, upholds' the original decision, and this representation is being considered by the special committee.
