CURRENT NOTES

Sir Cyril and Lady Ward and family, who have been spending some * weeks at their cottage at North New Brighton, returned yesterday to their home in Merivale lane. Mrs J. Wyn Irwin (Hagley avenue) and her son, Dr. B. T. Wyn Irwin, of Wellington, will leave by the Port Jackson next month for a visit to Britain. Mrs George Buchanan and Miss Shirley Buchanan (Fendalton) will leave to-morrow night on the first stage of their journey to England. They will travel by the Rotorua. Mr and Mrs J. N. Millar (Sydney) will arrive in Christchurch at the beginning of February to attend the wedding of their niece, Miss Helen Thomson, to Mr T, Rutherford, of “Iffley,” North Canterbury. They will stay with Dr. and Mrs A. C. Thomson, Montreal, street. Mrs Thomson’s mother and sister, Mrs H. B. Millar (Dunedin) and Mrs H. O’Neill (Havelock North), will also be Dr. and Mrs Thomson’s guests for the wedding. Dr. and Mrs T. Mill, formerly of Christchurch, now of England, who have been visiting Port Chalmers, left Christchurch last night for Auckland. Mrs Frank H. Smith and Misses Helen, Barbara, and Robin Smith (Waratah, Albury), who have been visiting Stewart Island, are now touring the Southern Lakes district and will return home next week. Mrs D. O. Ollson and Miss Dorothy Ollson (Nelson) are visiting Christchurch and are the guests of Mrs F. L. Brewer, Manchester street north. Mr and Mrs C. Bryant (Armagh street) will leave by the steamer express this evening to join the Wanganella for Sydney, where they will attend the Empire Games. They will later leave by the Orion for a tour of England, Europe, and the United States. Mrs J. H. King and family (Papanui), Mrs J. Shimanski and two daughters (Styx), and Mrs J. F. Neville (Papanui) are camping at Waikuku. Miss M. Downs and Miss W. Crossen are their guests. Miss Joan Colville-Cook (Hamilton), who is visiting her aunt, Mrs J. R. Evans, Cambridge terrace, will leave for the north to-morrow night. Mrs F. L. Webb (Colombo street) and Miss E. Turner are spending a fortnight’s holiday at Anakiwa Homestead, Queen Charlotte Sound. Colonel and Mrs E. Puttick and the Misses Puttick, formerly of Christchurch, whd have been in England for about two years, are returning to New -Zealand by the Akaroa, due in Wellington on January 31. ; . They will come to Christchurch to visit Mrfe Oldham’s parents, Mr and Mrs T. F. Gibson, Fendalton. Mr and Mrs F. J. Savill (Hanmer Springs) and Mr and Mrs Howard Savill (England) are visiting Timaru for the , Savill-Orbell wedding to-day. Mrs H. D. Hall and Miss R. Hall (Fendalton), who have been -visiting England, are returning by the Akaroa, due in Wellington on January 31. Mr and Mrs J. Roy Smith (Fendalton) have returned to Christchurch from a holiday spent in Timaru. Mrs G. A. Smith- (Spreydon> has returned from a holiday in Auckland. Dr. and Mrs No,rth and Miss North (Dunedin), who have been visiting Britain, are returning to New Zealand by the Imperial Star, due in Auckland on January 27. Passengers booked for Lyttelton from Southampton by the Akaroa, due in Wellington on January 31, include Mr and Mrs E. C. Huie, Mr and Mrs D. F. Reid, Misses A. S. Bourke; A. M. F. 80wker,....N.. K. Lewis, Mr C.- de S. Teschemaker, and for Timaru Misses M. E. Marriott and D. H. Tuck. Mrs L. M. Knight and Mrs George Gillanders (Darfield) and her children are staying at “Beachcliffs,” Sumner. Mrs John Buchanan, of 246 Gloucester street, has left for Dunedin and Gore and will return at the end of January. Miss Evelyn Buchanan is spending a holiday at “Huntingdon,” Woodstock, Oxford. Mrs Elsa Kingston left Invercargill yesterday for the north en route to London. The-wedding will take place in London in April of Dr. J. R. Gilmour, second son of Mr and Mrs D. J. Gilmour (Invercargill), and Miss Dawn East, younger, daughter of Mr and Mrs H. C. East (Christchurch). Dr. Gilmour is a member of the staff of the London Hospital. Mrs W. S. Bean (Beverley street) has left for Wellington to attend the funeral of her brother-in-law, Mr Frank Dyer. Mrs Joseph Holm and family (Cromwell), who have been visiting Miss Mina Ward, Manchester street north, returned home yesterday. . Mrs T. Archey (Colombo street north) will leave to-morrow for Wellington to connect with the Rotorua. Her daughters, Mrs J. C. MacPherson, Mrs N. Bates, and Miss Marjorie Archey, will accompany her to Wellington. Mr and Mrs Charles Batchelor (Central Otago) and their small son will arrive to-day to stay with Mr and Mrs Herbert Elworthy, Craigmore. South Canterbury. Miss Patricia Foster . (Papanui road), who has been spending five weeks’ holiday in the North Island, hr; returned home. Mrs David Williams and her small daughter will return to Hawke’s Bay at the end of the week after spending a few weeks with Mr and Mrs Herbert Elworthy, at Craigmore, South Canterbury.Mr and Mrs James Mortlock (Church lane, Merivale) will leave this evening fot Wellington and will then motor to Auckland, where they will join the Monterey on January 21 for a month’s holiday in Australia.
