The International Trades Union Conference, representing 17 countries, resolved to demand international control of war material and the application of the League Covenant against the aggressor in the Spanish conflict to prevent the granting of belligerent rights to General Franco and to ensure the freedom of the sea routes. Democracies vere asked to cooperate against revolutionary tendencies. A protest was lodged against anti-Semitism as an excuse for creating Fascist dictatorships. FRANCOS PLAN OF FINANCE STERLING FORCED FROM BRITISH COMPANIES (WHITED PRESS ASSOCIATION— COtTB.IGHT.I (Received January 18, 10 p.m.) LONDON, January 18. During 1937 the British owned Rio Tinto copper and iron pyrites mines were compelled to hand £1,250,000 to General Franco’s Government in exchange for paper pesetas at 42 to the £. General Franco’s officials had refused permits to ship ore unless sterling was deposited equivalent to the value of the products. This is one of General Franco s principal methods of financing the war If he can continue to force British companies to supply him with necessary sterling for foreign credits, he will continue bartering with Italy and Germany to the mutual benefit of all three. REBEL AIR RAIDS CONTINUE ATTACKS MADE ON FIVE CITIES FIVE KILLED AND FORTY WOUNDED (Received January 18, 8 p.m.) BARCELONA, January 17. The rebels carried out air raids on Barcelona, Reus, Sagunto, Burri-a-a and Valencia, killing five and wounding 40. At Valencia, the Loyalists claim that they brought down two aeroplanes. WHOLESALE EXECUTIONS AT BILBAO REPORT BY' BASQUE DELEGATE IN LONDON LONDON, January 17. A Basque Government delegate to London confirms the continuation of General Franco’s wholesale execution of Basque leaders, officials, and others. x , 10 0 He adds that apart from 128 executed in December 31 were shot in Larringa prison at Bilbao on January 9, in spite of the Loyalists clemency to rebel captives at Teruei.
