The Minister for Mines (the Hon. P. C. Webb) arrived in Christchurch last night after a fortnight's tour of the West Coast. He was accompanied by his private secretary (Mr S. Y. Jones). Mr Webb's plans for to-day do not include any public engagements. He will probably leave for Wellington this evening. The Hon. R. Semple, Minister for Public Works, arrived in Christchurch from Wellington yesterday morning. During a visit of five days the Minister and his nephew, Mr Hamilton Knight, a member of the New South Wales State Parliament, will inspect the Rangitata irrigation scheme and the Parnassus end of the South Island Main Trunk railway. Yesterday, Mr Semple received private deputations in Christchurch, and he will hear further deputations on Monday, leaving for Wellington on Monday evening. Mr Knight, who lived formerly in New Zealand, working in mines on the West Coast, arrived, in Christchurch from Greymouth last evening. Mr T. H. Langford, No. 3 Transport Licensing District Authority, will return from South Canterbury on Monday. Mr R. McGillivray, superintendent of the fields division (Canterbury and Westland) of the Department of Agriculture, will return to Christchurch on Monday. Mr R. Guy, an assistant-master at the Timaru Boys' High School, has been appointed to the staff of the Christchurch Training College as educational officer in the Canterbury Museum. His new duties will start on February 1. Lieutenant-Colonel N. S. Faila, seconded to the Royal New Zealand Air Force for duty with the Territorial Air Force, is granted the honorary rank of group captain, according to a Gazette notice.—Press Association. The Senate of the University of New Zealand at its annual meeting, welcomed the following new members: Dr. Sylvia G. de L. Chapman, who has the distinction of being the first woman in New Zealand appointed to the Senate; Professor R. J. T. Bell, Mr W. H. Cocker, Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., Mr S. N. Ziman, and Mr Norton Francis. Mr J. A. Roy, M.P., arrived from the north yesterday. Dr. Frank A'Court was among the passengers from the North Island yesterday morning. Lieutenant-Colonel R. Miles, of the Royal New Zealand Artillery, has been promoted to the rank of colonel, according to the Gazette. Colonel I. T. Standish, of the Royal New Zealand Artillery, on his appointment as aide de camp to the King, relinquishes his appointment as honorary aide de camp to the Gover-nor-General. —Press Association. Mr H. C. Lusty, assistant chief engineer to the Railways Department, arrived in the city from the north yesterday morning, and returned to Wellington by the steamer express last night. During the day he discussed with railway officials in Christchurch details of plans for the new station. The following promotions in the Royal New Zealand Air Force are announced in the Gazette:—Squadron Leader J. L. Findlay to be wing commander; Flight Lieutenant H. B. Burreli to be squadron leader; Fight Lieutenant E. G. Olson to be squadron leader.— Press Association.

Mr G D Healy, Melbourne, superintendent of the Bank of Australasia, is visiting Christchurch. Sir Stenson Cooke, secretary of the Automobile Association of Great Britain, who will make a tour of the Dominion, will arrive in Auckland on March 7. During his visit he will meet as many motorists and motoring bodies as possible. He will arrive in Christchurch from Wellington on March 22, and will leave for Dunedin on March 25. The executive committee of the South Island Motor Union decided last evening to ask the various local associations if they would agree to hold the quarterly meeting of the union in Christchurcn instead of the West Coast on March 21, the day before his visit.
