POPULARITY OF YACHTING
ACCOMMODATION TAXED AT LYTTELTON
"Yachting and motor-boating are increasing in popularity. The harbourmaster reports that every available mooring at Dampiers Bay, on the western side of the inner harbour, is occupied and there is a waiting list," reported the chairman (Mr R. T. McMillan) at the meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday. "The space available at the low level breast work for launches and fishing boats is almost completely filled and I understand that the harbour-master has other applications waiting. "The time is approaching, if it has not already come, when the board and yachting interests should face the question of a boat harbour in some other suitable situation, and I suggest that a conference be held between representatives of the board and of all the yachting clubs to discuss the matter and see if any feasible plan can be evolved. ~ "Even the shore shelter for dinghys, which the board has provided, has become too small, and applications for more space will come before you today." , ari "I think it is high time we stopped putting these tooth-picks in the inner harbour," said Mr H. M. Chrystall, when referring to the increase in the number of mooring piles. He agreed that accommodation would have to be found for the small craft, but thought the board should take a long-range view and consider the construction of a boat-harbour elsewhere than in the inner harbour. Magazine Bay might be a suitable place if easy road access could be provided It was decided to provide 30 additional shelters for dinghies on the reclaimed land. Messrs R. T. McMillan, F. E. Sutton, H. M. Chrystall, and T. W. Lester were appointed to confer with the yachting interests.
