A HAPPY GATHERING

CROWD AT RICCARTON

LAST DAY OP CUP WEEK

Cup Week, which ended on Saturday, will long be remembered for the great success of the Canterbury Jockey Club's metropolitan meeting and for the unbroken spell of fine weather which added to the enjoyment of those attending the many sporting and social gatherings held during Carnival Week. A very large crowd was present at Riccarton when the fourth day's programme was run on Saturday in fine, dull weather, with overcast sky and cold wind. Everyone was in buoyant mood; those who had won earlier in the week were confident that their luck woidd hold; those who had lost felt that, with the accumulation of knowledge gained by previous experience, they would be able to turn loss into gain by the end of the day. Although they had had a strenuous week, Mr Arthur Elworthy (chairman), Mrs Elworthy, and officials of the club were indefatigable in discharging their duties as hosts, their generous hospitality being extended particularly to visitors and to those closely connected with racing.
