MOTOR SPEED RECORD ATTEMPT
SECOND FAILURE BY CAPTAIN EYSTON NEW YORK, November 7. A message from Bonneville, Utah, states that Captain George Eyston, the British racing motorist, again failed to obtain a record, although his car, Thunderbolt, recorded 303.2955 miles an hour. This was because clutch trouble prevented the return trip. . . The failure of the electric timing device to operate effectively at the moment the Thunderbolt entered the measured mile is believed to have prevented the recording of Captam Eyston’s true speed, which he estimated on the basis of his own tachometer readings as 315 miles an hour. Captain Eyston said: “I am most disappointed. The engine requires radical treatment. lam not abandoning the effort to break the record. but the weather may not permit another attempt this year.” Captain Eyston will make a further attempt on the record within a fortnight, after radical alterations have been made to the Thunderbolt’s clutch.
