' HOSPITAL AT METHVEN Position of Matron APPLICATIONS TO BE CALLED Applications for the position of matron of the Methven Cottage Hospital, which has fallen vacant through the resignation of Miss M. Wilson, at a subsidy of £250 a year, will be called by the Ashburton Hospital Board, according to a statement issued after a long discussion in committee on the future of the hospital yesterday. The chairman (Mr W. G. Gallagher) reported on the public meeting at Methven last Friday, when one of the two resolutions passed was that the board be asked to call applications for the position of matron so that the hospital could be carried on as before. Others present at the board's meeting were Messrs W. Bryant, C. A. Campion, R. Oakley, H. E. Jessep W. H. Wilkinson, F. Frampton, and Dr. J. Russell Wells. . . . There were 87 patients remaining at the end of September, and 90 were admitted during October, said the report of the medical supenntendent/Dr. A. J. Mason). A total of 108 patients were discharged, leaving 69 in the institution. There were 139 outpatients, 76 massage, 228 diathermy, and nine ultra-violet ray treatments, 171 X-ray examinations, six plaster, and 60 surgical operations. The matron (Miss E. J. Watt) reported that Nurses Curie, Vincent, and Lyon had returned from holiday, and Nurses Salkeld, Wallace, and Pavelka were on leave. Malvern Home Report The report from Malvern Home said that 14 patients were admitted, 21 discharged, and three remained for October. Forty-one ante-natal patients were seen for the month. For the relief committee, Mr Bryant reported that £3O 6s 8d had been paid out in charitable aid during the month. The chairman said that the board had lodged an objection to its inclusion in the Christchurch Clerks, Cashiers' and Office Employees' Union award. . , „ _. Advice was received from the Direc-tor-General of Health (Dr. M. H. Watt) that the Audit Department would no longer object to expenditure on installation and maintenance of wireless receiving sets. The chairman said that previously the department did not agree to the expenditure of general funds on the sets, the money coming from the Christmas appeal funds. He thought the hospital was well equipped with wireless sets at present. The board decided to ask the medical superintendent for a report on the efficiency of the equipment and also for any recommendations. Secretary Appointed Approval of the appointment of Mr J H. Chapman, of Dunedin, as secretary of the board, was received from the Director-General of Health. A reunion of nurses who had been trained at the Ashburton Hospital had been arranged for March 10, said the medical superintendent, and they, desired to inspect the hospital in the morning. A garden party would be held in the afternoon. Permission to inspect the institution was granted. SWIMMING MEETING OF ASHBURTON CLUB OFFICERS ELECTED FOR THE YEAR Last season was perhaps without parallel in the history of the club, said the report presented to the annual meeting of the Ashburton Amateur Swimminß Club last evening. Mr A. J. McCailum (president) presided. The general feeling at the beginning of the season was that the club would have to disband, but owing to a very enthusiastic annual meeting, an agreement was drawn up with the Borough School Committee, and it was unanimously decided to carry on. The present financial position of the club was very unsatisfactory because no carnivals were held. The year commenced with a credit of £4 14s 3d and ended with a credit of £1 8s lid. - The following officers were elected: "Patron, Mr W. H. Woods; president, Mr R M. McGregor; vice-presidents, Messrs S. Madden, J. W. Bcwden, H. P. Milsom. and McCailum; club captain, Mr E. Knox; vice-captain, Mr B. Macmillan; secretary and treasurer, Mr A. C. Bray; assistant secretary, Mr Macmillan; auditor, Mr J. Keig; committee. Messrs R. G. Ross. P. Hanrahan. E. Stayt. J. Milsom. G. Bowden, S. J. Duncan; Misses J. Denley, and J. Vincent; delegates to Ashburton Swimming Centre, Messrs J. C. C. McLachlan and Duncan. Mr H. F. McElrea reported that the Ashburton Borough School Committee had accepted the same agreement as last year for the hire of the baths by the club. SCHOOL JUBILEE AT RUAPUNA ARRANGEMENTS MADE The first meeting held since the postponement of the jubilee last Easter, because of the infantile paralysis epidemic, was held in the Ruapuna School on Friday evening. Mr R. W. Holland presided. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of Mr S. B. McLauchlan, who was a member of the executive committee. Mr McLauchlan was one of the eight children who answered the first roll call in 1887. It was decided to hold the function next Easter, and to carry out the programme as arranged for last Easter.

DOMAIN OVAL CONDITION OF SURFACE SPORTS' ASSOCIATION'S VIEW "The domain oval Is the principal ground lor sports and other functions in the county, and in its present condition does not reflect credit on the town," said the president of the A.snburton Sports' Association (Mr J. a - Nicoll), in a letter to the Ashburton Domain Board last evening. . The letter said that the association had been approached by the Ashburton Cricket Club to draw attention to the very rough state of the oval. The ground was becoming unsafe for fielding because of the rough surface and lack of turf. With the use pt this ground by winter sports bodies it was even more necessary that it receive careful attention in the early spring. Athletes also said that the oval was not in a fit state. Mr R. Kerr, chairman of the reserve committee, said the ground had been getting worse each year, and the weeds now had a strong hold. He suggested that an expert's opinion should be odtained to see how the area could be improved. „. , „ ~ The Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods) said it was not only the weeds but the roughness of the surface. Not sufficient attention was given to the ground immediately before the football season closed. He hoped the removal of the trees would have a beneficial effect. If football was permitted next season, the ground would have to be given attention after the close of play. It would be well worth while to ask for expert opinion. Perhaps it would be necessary to close the area for two seasons to get it into proper order. It was decided that Mr Kerr interview Messrs Millichamp Bros, to find the best method of dealing with the oval. The association wrote offering the board a total of £129 for the rent of the grounds for the year, plus any revenue from closed days. It also made several recommendations about allocation and care of grounds. The total included a rental of £4 payable by the High School Cricket Club for the use of the ground above that of the Kia Ora Cricket Club for the season. The rent and recommendations were accepted.
