+ ASHBURTON COUNCIL MEETS RESTRICTED USE OF WATER Because of the increased demand for water through the dry season, the Ashburton Borough Council decided last evening to restrict the use of garden hoses between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m., and 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. daily. It was explained that the regulations prohibited the use of garden hoses on Sundays end holidays. Those present were the Mayor (Mr W H Woods), Messrs E. H. Orr, R. Kerr, S. Mitchell, J. Shaw, E. Buchanan, H. W. Sherratt/J. Thompson, J. T. Pratley, J. McElhinney, and Dr. J. Connor. The financial statement showed that receipts since the previous meeting totalled £1542 Is 9d, the chief items being:—Rates £449 16s 8d (current), £4 2s 9d (arrears), rents £BO 9s Bd, abattoir fees £l2l lis 4d. The director of the South Islands Travel Association of New Zealand (Mr J. S. W. Pollard), wrote asking if the council had yet reached a decision about taking a page in the book "Discovery," to be issued shortly by the association. It was decided to take no action. Permission to screen pictures at the St. James' Theatre on Christmas night was granted to the Fuller-Hayward Theatre Corporation, subject to the programme being approved. Requests for contributions were received from the Ashburton branch of the Plunkst Society and the Asnburton Health Camp Association. The usual grant was made to the former, and £2 10s to the latter. Advice was received from the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade that Superintendent L. J. Kidd, DeputySuperintendent H. Hefford, Firemen C. J. Bax and S. Preddy had been appointed to meet the fire brigade committee of the council to discuss fire brigade affairs. The abattoir returns for the month showed that stock was slaughtered as follows:—Cattle 145 (one condemned); calves 10, sheep 721 (two condemned), lambs 14, pigs 61 (one condemned). It was reported that permits for two buildings at a total cost of £585 had been issued since the last meeting. ASHBURTON PERSONAL NOTES Congratulations to Sister V. E. Dearsley, dietitian at the Ashburton Public Hospital, on her appointment as examiner for the examinations to be held by the New Zealand Nurses and Midwives" Registration Board at Oamaru next month, were offered by the Hospital Board yesterday morning. The Rev. R. S. Watson (Ashburton), the Rev. L. V. Bibby (Methven), and Mr H. Brntley (Flemington-Tinwald-Lagmhor charge), have left to attend the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, which opens at Auckland to-morrow. Mr Watson is convener of tho assembly's committee on life and work and faith and order, and among other matters will bring forward proposals for the 1940 centennial celebrations of the' Presbyterian Church in Hew Zealand. He is also to address the assembly ys>uth rallynext Sunday afternoon. Mr F. A. B. Stuart, of Parua Bay, Whangarei, and formerly inspector of reserves for the Ashburton County Council, was a visitor to Ashburton yesterday.
