GERMANY AND VERSAILLES
"NOT ONE RED CENT
OF RESPECT"
DR. GOEBBELS CONDEMNS DEAD TREATY (Received November 7, It p.m.) BERLIN, November 6. Remarking that he had no sensations to announce, the Minister for Propaganda (Dr. P. J. Goebbels) told an audience of 17,000 that the world was only surprised at Germany's actions because it did not know Germany since January 10 1933. Germany had not paid one red cent of respect to her obligation un der the Treaty of Versailles. If other countries had not pressed for payment it was because they knew the answer would make them lose their sight and hearing.
Europe had to realise that Versailles was dead. Herr Hitler had rendered a great service to the world in tearing it up page by page. If the world was stupid enough to allow the Bolshevik experiment to succeed in Spain, they must know that Germany would not tolerate it. Apart from attacks on the foreign press, and on Roman Catholicism, and opposition to the German church and Russia, the speech had no fireworks. Dr. Goebbels predicted that Germany would be self-sufficient in from two to three years. Admitting a scarcity of foodstuffs, he declared: "How different is the position of wealthy Great Britain and wealthy France! They possess whole continents, they are living in abundarce, yet they tell us that Germany has the highest standard of living. In Germany there prevail at least law and order. No one needs to sleep on pavements or cover himself with newspapers."
