RANGIORA SHOW

■ < HIGH STANDARD OF i! EXHIBITS i | GOOD JERSEY CATTLE : i 11 FINE DISPLAY OF ENGLISH | LEICESTERS | ■ | j i The sixty-eighth show of the North- I : ern (Rangiora' Agricultural and Pas-, toral Association was held in ideal . \ weather, at Rangiora yesterday, and i f attracted the best attendance for some , ; years, visitors coming from many pariS of North Canterbury. Although entries were below ' last year’s, most of ,■, the stock shown was of good quality j. and in the English Leicester sheep and , Jersey cattle sections, prize-winning , animals were highly praised by the l judges- The takings at the gate were , ■ £lO5. compared with £99 last year. . ■ Entries were 181 down on last year , and a third of the decrease was re- . presented in a falling-off in the num- ( ber of sheep on display. Cattle had . also dropped from 115 to 88. Horses were about the same as at last show. - and pigs and dogs were almost double ■; those of 1936. j. The Sheep Outstanding m the sheep classes were . the pens of English Leicesters. E. S. ; Tay’or secured the champion and reserve ribbons for rams, and the charn- ; , pion ewe. exhibited by T. L. Jenkin- ■ was described by the judge, Mr R. J ; • Low, as tne best sheep at the show. ; and as good as any that could be seen at any show this season. Particular ; interest attaches at the Rangiora show to the Corriecale section, which ha? been a feature of the sheep classes for: nfanv years. The Rangiora Association is claimed to be the first in the ' v ’ oldd ; to have included classes for Corne • dales, in the very early days of their : breeding, and the judge yesterdaj. -Ir , iC. H, Ensor. said that the exhibits . I this year were a credit to the work ‘of the younger breeders. Champion ram was shown by Ensor Bros., and , iA. E. Cross took the champion and . ' reserve champion ribbons for Corne- . ; dale ewes. The J. Stevenson Estate : j was the most successful exhibitor in < the merino classes, showing the cham-. ; j pion and reserve champion rams and • i the champion ewe. , ! L. E. Meyers and the Misses M. and ; • ■ y Mevers. were the only exhibitors : in the* Border Leicester classes, the : latter showing the champion ewe. . : J. D. Galnin added to his list oi 1 sheep successes at shows already this • J season bv showing the champion South-;. 1 down ram. The reserve champion rib- ■ ’ bon was won by a fine entry by the;; i Rangiora High School. J. D. Galpm ■ also took the highest award for ewes i with W. J. Jenkins in second place.;, H Dickhoff. the only exhibitor, madei, a good showing in the Shropshire Down ; classes. J. D. Galpin also showed the ■ champion ewe in the halfbred classes | - The Cattle Classes ; ■ J. Peach’s bull. Milbrook Earl of j i Col'ac. won the premier award for i Shorthorns, and also showed the cham- 1 1 pion bull Sefton Champion, in the I : milking Shorthorn classes, for which 1 ; the entries were better. G. G. Good- J win's Greendale Belle II was the cham-; - pion cow. In the Jersey section, the j quality of which has been a feature ! s of the Rangiora Show for some years , I and which is fully maintained this sea- ; son, J. Johnson showed the champion; * bull. Kuku Prince Royal and also the*' champion and reserve champion cow | 2

The Cattle Classes J. Peach's bull. Milbrook Earl of Col'ac. won the premier award for Shorthorns, and also showed the champion bull Sefton Champion, in the : milking Shorthorn classes, for which the entries were better. G. G. Goodwin's Greendale Belle II was the champion cow. In the Jersey section, the quality of which has been a feature of the Rangiora Show for some years and which is fully maintained this season, J. Johnson showed the champion bull. Kuku Prince Royal and also the champion and reserve champion cow In the Jersey heifer classes, F. E. Martvn and J. Fleming were most successful. Interest in the Jerseys at the show was heightened by a demonstration given on the points of the breed by the judge. Mr L. A. Higgins. Mrs C. J. Williams exhibited a fine line of Ayrshires. and A. and J. Rainey were most successful in close competition .among a good lot of Friesians. J. Johnson, with his Jerseys, wen the prize for the best dairy cow at the show, and also the champion ribbon for the best cow or heifer in profit. Mr L. A. Higgins expressed surprise at the strength of the Jersey cattle section, saying that many of the exhibits were excellent, particularly in the old age female and bull classes. The winners of these, shown by J. Johnson, would be difficult to better at any show. The reserve champion bull shown by Dodge Brothers, was also a fine animal. Mr Higgins said the main criticism of the younger female classes was a rather general weakhess in the back quarters of the vessel.

Draught Horses Particular interest was taken in the parade of draughts this year, and some fine horses were shown. J. Petrie's two-year-old colt. Thornprint won the championship, but the most consistently successful of tjie many exhibitors was John Wyllie, who won the association’s fifth champion prize, the Mclntosh Memorial Cup for the best stallion three years or over, and the Thomas Wyllie Memorial Cuo for the champion draught mare or filly.

Light Horses Miss Rona Little’s Troublemaker repeated its success of last year in the light horse classes. The section, generally. was good, and the competition well sustained. The ouality was well up to the standard of former shows. A. GiPanders added to his successes in earlier shows this season and Miss Rona Little and Miss M. Little were consistently successful. Mr G. A. Kain. who judged the hunters, was very favourably imnressed bv the section. He said fh« horses were without exception a good lot. and in Several of the classes he had difficulty in separating them, the jumping being better than any he had seen for a long time. The following is the the numbers within parenthesis indicating the number of entries in the respective classes:—
