IMPORTING OF PARROT FROM AUSTRALIA
CHARGE AGAINST SEAMAN AT AUCKLAND
(PAK33 ASSOCIATION TXLEGHAM.) AUCKLAND, November 2. Thomas Roach, a seaman, was charged on summons With importing into New Zealand on October 30 an Australian parrot, contrary to the Animals Protection and Game Act. When Roach's counsel applied for an adjournment, Sub-Inspector Fox said that, the maximum penalty was £2OO, or six months' imprisonment. As Roach was coming off a ship two Customs officers accosted him and found a parrot beneath his shirt. Roach deliberately threw the parrot into thd air and thus disposed of the evidence. The charge was a serious one, as parrots were disease-carriers. The hearing was adjourned until Friday.
