SET HOUSE ON FIRE

WRESTLING

| BOY FEARED DISCOVERY OF THEFT j BUILDING DESTROYED A charge of setting fire to an eightrocmed house, valued at £SOO. which, it was stated he had done to cover up the theft of a medal valued at 15s, was made against a boy aged 15 years, in the Children's Court on Saturday. He was also charged with stealing the medal, stealing a bicycle valued at £l7 ss, and breaking and entering the house. A plea of guilty was entered on each count. The police stated that the boy was at present under the guardianship of the State. He had been licensed out to work in the country, and on the day of the Rugby match between the Springboks and South Canterbury, had entered a house about 200 yards away, when the occupants had gone to the match. He stole the medal, and afterwards, when he saw traces of gumboot marks on the premises he set fire to some papers, an action which led to the burning of the house to the ground. The bicycle was stolen later and had been recovered. Counsel, who stated that he was appearing on behalf of the boy's mother, who was worried about the crimes, submitted that the boy had a satisfactory record while under the control of the State. The crimes had arisen from one series. He suggested that the boy required careful handling rather than rigid control. Mr H. A. Young. S.M. (with whom were associated Mrs T. J. Green, J.P., and Mr W. M. West. J.P.), said that there were special circumstances about the case, and that the boy would undergo a special examination and would be returned to the department. An order was also made for the return of the medal and the bicycle.

September 11, Eight rounds of the professional wrestling contest at the Theatre Royal, Westport. on Saturday night resulted in Frank Judson (Canada), 16st 101b, beating "Rusty” Westcoatt (Honolulu), 16st 31b. on points, after each man had gained one fall. The attendance was poor, and was aifectcd by the adverse weather. The bout was characterised by an excessive amount of showmanship that was at times very much overdone, and there was little legitimate wrestling. In the third round Judson punished Westcoatt with an Indian deathlock, and the latter submitted after pressure had been applied for some minutes. Westcoatt gained the equalising fall In the seventh round with a series of flying tackles, headlocks, and dumps, followed by a body press. Judson secured most points in the eighth round, and was awarded the decision. Preliminary amateur contests resulted: — Clark (Denniston) beat Todd (Denniston) on points; Hay (Karamca) beat Barnett (Reefton) by one fall in the second round; Croft (Christchurch) beat Calianan (Runanga) on points; B.
