HIGHER RATES FROM N.Z. TO ENGLAND LONDON, September 10. It is cfficiaLy announced that passenger fares on the England-Aus-I tralia and Australia-America lines will be increased by an average of 10 per cent, from October 1. A shipping spokesman from the Australian and New Zealand Passenger Conference explained in an interview with the Australian Associated Press that the increases would apply to all lines trading between England and Australia and England and New Zealand, also between North America, Australia, and New Zealand. Rates will vary according to the port and class of vessel, but will be approximately 10 per cent. They will not apply to passages booked prior to October 1. The spokesman added that the companies were reluctant to increase, the fares, but it was unavoidable bepause of increased operating costs and the higher price of new tonnage. Moreover, economies in propulsion would be given back to the public in the form of larger accommodation, thus reducing the payable space. The companies stated that the rates would still be below those of 1932.
