DOUBTS EXPRESSED IN ROME
ITALIAN ATTITUDE TO PATROL IN MEDITERRANEAN (Received September 12, 10.30 p.m.) ROME, September 11. Doubt is expressed whether Italy will agree to Britain and France alone patrolling the Mediterranean, in which she claims complete equality with other Powers. However, she may favourably consider the proposals, provided the invitation comes from the Non-intervention Committee. SPANISH CRITICISM OF PLAN "SLMILAR TO GRANTING OF BELLIGERENT RIGHTS" (Received September 12, 9.40 p.m.) GENEVA, September 11. The Spanish delegation to the League of Nations expresses the fear that the Nyon plan will protect only non-Spanish vessels, thus establishing the right to torpedo Spanish shins. It is therefore suspiciously similar to the granting to General Franco of belligerent rights. LEAGUE COUNCIL DEBATE ADJOURNED GENEVA, September 10. The Council of the League of Nations agreed to consider the Spanish appeal charging Italy with attacking Republican ships. Mr Anthony Eden promised to make a statement on Palestine. The council adjourned until September 14,t0 enable delegates to attend the Nyon conference.
