FERNSIDE CRICKET CLUB

ELEVENTH ANNUAL MEETING HELD At the eleventh annual meeting of the Fcrnside Cricket Club, the following officers were elected:—Patron, Mr F. Dawson; president, Mr W. Smith; vice-presidents, Messrs C. Cattermoor, H. Gibbs, W. V. Guy, J. Evans, F. Minchington, and S. C. Hewitt; secretary, Mr L. S. Carpenter; club captain, Mr Jack Smith; committee, Messrs James Smith, C. W. Minchington, H. Guy, T. A. Prior, J. Evans, J A. Mackenzie, J. Sinclair, and O. G. Murphy; auditor, Mr W. V. Guy; delegates to North Canterbury Subassociation, • Messrs Carpenter and Prior; selectors, captain, vice-captain, club captain, and captain of junior B team; captain, Mr Carpenter; vicecaptain, Mr James Smith. It was decided to open the season on September 18 and to enter a junior A and a junior B team in the subassociation competitions. SOUTHBRIDGE FOOTBALL CLUB TEAMS ENTERTAINED To mark their success in winning the Ellesmcre Sub-Union's first and second-grade shields the Southbridge Rugby Football Club entertained its two teams at a smoke concert. Mr L. R. Maw (president) was in the chair, and many members of other clubs were present, as well as Mr V. J. Miller (president of the sub-union). The toasts honoured included: "The King," proposed by the chairman; "The Ellesmere Sub-Union (Mr F. Lambie —Messrs F. J. Miller and N. R WithelU; "The First-grade Team" (Mr F. J. Miller—Mr S. McCartin); ; "The Second-grade Team" (Mr K. ! Woods—Mr A. Lambie); "The Coach" (Mr S. McCartin—Mr C. J. Oliver); and "The Selectors" (Dr. E. W. HuntMessrs H. G. Hill and G. Burt). Replying to-the toast to "The Coach," Mr C. J. Oliver (former All Black) said that ho Had accepted an invitation to coach the teams because of a desire to do what he could to bring country football up to the standard of the 1925-26 seasons, when country players were chosen for the provincial teams. SOCIAL AT HALSWELL A card party and dance were held in the Halswell Hall under the auspices of the Hall Committee. Competitions, at the card tables were won by Mrs Chapman and Mrs Etterick, Messrs J. Deerey, and Mr J. McDrury. In the dance hall, novelty dances were won by Miss G. Thompson and Mr B. McNamara. Miss Wakelin and Mr Howard, Miss Brightwell and Mr Clarke, and Miss E. Rogers and Mr L. Adams. Music for dancing was supplied by Colin Smart's orchestra, and the masters of ceremonies were Messrs F. Wilhelm, H. Hayes, W. Chapman, and H. Sunbeam. Supper was served by the committee. CARD PARTY AT WEST MELTON A euchre party and dance were held in the West Melton Hall recently to help Uhe funds of the Horticultural Society. Competitions resulted as follows:—Women: Mrs W. Hayes 1, Miss Lettie Watson (HalkeU) 2- men, Mr R. Watson (Halkett) 1, Mr Donnethorne (Weedons) 2. Dancing was enjoyed to music played by Mrs W. Hayes. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss Agnes Donaldson and Mr L. Prouting. Mr A. Summerfield was master of ceremonies. Personal Miss Jean Archie (Dunedin) and Mr D Stevenson (Dunedin) visited West Melton recently and were the guests of Mr and Mrs W. Archie. Mrs H. E. Cross ("Lawford"), accompanied by her children, has returned home after spending a fortnight's holiday with relatives and friends at Pleasant Valley and Geraldine. SHEFFIELD TENNIS CLUB The annual meeting of the Sheffield Tennis Club was held in the Agricultural and Pastoral Association's room recently. In the absence of the president, Mr H. C. Townshend, Mr A. BALL AT SEDGEMERE There was a large attendance at the annual ball held by the bachelors and spinsters of Sedgemere. and'« very pleasant evening was spent. The hall was eallv decorated with coloured streamers, and electric lights, and greenery. Excellent arrangements had been made by a strong committee with Mr Ralph Patterson as chairman and Miss N. Morton and Mr R. Ellison as joint secretaries. Dance music was supplied by Mr Colin Campbell's orchestra, and Mrs R. Lambie played extras. The joint masters of ceremonies were Messrs C. Marsh and F. R. Stretz. Prizes for a Monte Carlo dance were won by Miss Ella Alexander and partner, and in a cards tournament the successful players were Mesdames W. F. Reese and R. C. Shearer, Messrs A.
