FIFTY MILES HOAD RACE CHAMPIONSHIP OF SOUTH ISLAND Thg 90-miles cycling road championship of the South Island was decided at Southbridge on Saturday afternoon, the nee being held under the auspices of the Southbridge Athletic Club. The roads were not In good order for cycling, there being many stretches of loose shingle. Tour circuits were made of a 12i-mile block, and of the 34 entrants 29 faced the starter and only nine completed the course. Mr W. J. Walter acted as starter, and he and Mrs Walter assisted with the timekeeping. H, J. Smlther, A. Clemence, 11. G. Watson, and D. A. Swanston were the scratch men, and the limit riders received a start of IS minutes. L. Dolheguy. of Christchurch. was the winner of the race, and also put up fastest time. The limit men covered the first circuit in 37 minutes 18 seconds, and the scratch men In 32 minutes 40 seconds, Watson pulling out in this round. By the end of the second round the field was reduced to 16. At the end of the third round the leaders were F. Parkin (15mln). D. Newell (ISmin), and B. Newell (13mln), with Dolheguy (Jmln) and C. B. Carr (13min) close up. Only nine riders were left In. The winner crossed the line well ahead of the man, with the others Well back.
