DAMAGES AWARDED

ACTION ARISING FROM MOTOR ACCIDENT Judgment for the plaintiff for general damages amounting to £350, found by a jury, and for £774 17s special damages, admitted by the defendant, was given, with costs according to scale, in a reserved decision delivered by his Honour Mr Justice Northcroft, in the Supreme Court yesterday. The plaintiff, Corry Robert Coulson, a carpenter, of Paroa, Greymouth, was represented by Mr C. J. O'Regan and the defendant, William Smith, a farmer, of Maitainui, South Westland, by Mr W. F. Tracy. The action arose out of an accident between the plaintiff's motor-cycle and the defendant's motor-car. The cycle was going along a country road and struck the defendant's car after the latter had reversed on to the road from a farm entrance to the left and ahead of the ~>laintiff. The jury found that there was no contributory negligence by the plaintiff and that the defendant was negligent. At the first hearing of the case on August 18, counsel for the defendant moved ' a judgment or alternatively a non-suit, and the case proceeded with leave to the defendant to move later for judgment, non-suit, or a new trial on the ground that the verdict was against the weight of evidence. In the opinion of the court the defendant could not succeed in any of these applications. After reviewing the verdict of the jury, and the grounds on which the verdict was arrived at, his Honour gave judgment for the plaintiff accordingly- ■
