Handicaps for the first day of the Geraldine meeting will be available on Monday, and acceptances will close on the following Monday. Answer to Correspondent: "Trainer," Riccartori—The distance of the Geraldine Cup is one mile and a quarter, not one mile and a half as appeared in the nominations. Good Prospects Royal Chief's iast finishing run at the end of six furlongs at Wanganui on Thursday will no doubt make him a staunch favourite for to-days Wanganui Guineas. He appears to stand out as the real stayer of the field. If he wins to-day, he should be able to repeat the performance in the Avondale Guineas next week. Back to Normal The Wingatui track was cut up badly at the Otago Hunt Club's meeting last month, but, as was the case 12 months ago. it has made a good recovery, and promises to be in very satisfactory order for the Dunedin Jockey Club's spring meeting next month. There has been no rain in the district since the Hunt fixture, and men have been employed continuously filling up all holes, and doing top-dressing where necessary. Owners who contemplate patronising the meeting can rest assured that everything is being done to have the ground in a satisfactory state and provided there is no serious break in the weather, the result should provide excellent going. Nominations for the meeting- will close on Friday next. Awapuni Trained Florence Mills, winner of the maiden event at Wanganui on Thursday, is trained at Awapuni by L. Wilson. Trip Off A number of proposed trips to Australia have recently been cancelled, the latest being that arranged some weeks ago for Friesland, winner or the last Thompson Handicap. The Chelmsford Stakes Spring racing will be advanced another stage in Sydney to-day. when the Chelmsford Stakes, weight for-age, nine furlonsis. will decided. The acceptoi-3 include Allunga, who beat Talking and Mala in the Warwick Stakes on August 28, and Mala will again oppose him, but Talking's name is missing. The field also includes Caesar winner o! the Hobartvine Stakes so a close contest is likely. Gold Rod is expected to contest the Tramway Handicap, seven furlongs, and much interest will centre in his performance. The Chelmsford Stakes has considerable interest to the Dominion, because of previous achievements in that event. In 1918 Gloaming, as a three-year-old, made his debut in the race, and, with the full allowance as a maiden, he cantered home eight lengths ahead of the favourite, Rebus. Gloaming won the A.J.C. Derby at his next start, and then the W.R.C. Champion Plate and the New Zealand Derby, but he was beaten by Sasanof in the G G. Stead Memorial Stakes at his fifth start.' That first season he won 13 races in 1G starts, his other defeats being at the hands of Desert Gold in the Taranaki Stakes, and then in the North Island Challenge Stakes at Trentham, when he was caught in the tapes and fell at the start. Although Gloaming made so successful a debut in the Chelmsford Stakes he was twice defeated in two subsequent attempts on the prize. In 1922 he was beaten a length by Beauford, on whom he turned the tables at their next meeting in the Hill Stakes at Rosehill. Two years later, then nine years old, and in his last season, he was easily defeated by Heroic, then a three-year-old, and he never had an opportunity of avenging that defeat. Rapine and Limerick In 1923, the year between Gloaming's two defeats, another New Zealander in Rapine, then a four-year-old won the Chelmsford narrowly from that good horse David. Three years later Rapine was third In the race, when Limerick recorded the first of his three successive Chelmsford wins. Limerick was a three-year-old that year, and he was having his third start and first win for the term, easily beating the favourite, Windbag, who had won the previous year. In his second success Limerick beat another New Zealander in Merry Mint, and his third win was over Winalot. Limerick thus bad the honour of winning the three Chelmsford Stakes he contested, and no other horse has ever won the race three times. Rogilla was twice successful in 1933 and 1934, beating Peter Pan on the second occasion. Bred in New Zealand The only Dominion-owned horse to win the Chelmsford since Limerick's sequence was Gaine Carrington as a three-year-old in 1932. But Dominionbred horses in Phar Lap as a four-year-old and Ammon Ra as a three-year-old were successful the two preceding years, and last year's winner was Gold Rod as a three-year-cld from two New Zealand-owned colts of the same age, Mala and Custos. Phar Lap was beaten by the flying Mollison as a three-year-old, and when he won the race the following year he had Nightmarch next behind him. TROTTING NOTES A Reminder A third forfeit for the New Zealand Trotting Stakes will fall due on Friday, October 1. This race is for three-year-old trotters, and will be decided at the Timaru Trotting Club's meeting next March. At the Stud Jack Potts has been at the stud a comparatively short time, but he has already established himself as a sire of early speed. Up to the present his classic winners include Frisco Lady (Sapling Stakes), Two's Loose (Timaru Nursery Stakes and Sapling Stakes), Gamble (New Zealand Derby), and Frisco Boy (All-Aged Stakes). During last season, the progeny of Jack Potts won 54 races and £10,825, the principal contributors being Pot Luck £1645, Lucky Jack £1492. Red Flush £903, Twos Loose £9OO, and Frisco Boy £765. Oversight Oversight, who has come into favour for the Railway Handicap, to be decided at Wellington to-day, is in L. Davidson's stable at New Brighton. In 20 starts last season Oversight was once second and once third. Southern Smil* There was some merit in Southern Smile's second to Double Great at New Brighton last Saturday, and the Southland-bred mare will be well supported at Hutt Park to-day. Double Great, on a heavy course, is one of the best pacers in commission, and Southern Smile had him fully extended. Favourites U. Scott is the ruling favourite for the Bollard Memorial Handicap at Wellington to-day, while Dark Hazard is the popular fancy for the Railway Handicap. Ashburton County R.C. Good nominations have been received for the two light harness events to be decided at the Ashburton County Racing Club's spring meeting on Saturday next, and close-contests should result. Included in the nominations for the Selma Handicap are several promising maidens, including the American-bred colt, Bing Crosby. He is trained by E. J. Smith, and, a four-year-old, he is by Grattan at Law from Lady Goslin. Stamboul, who will race at Wellington to-day, is also engaged. Auckland The progressive policy adopted by the Auckland Trotting Club recently has resulted in a further increase in stakes for the October meeting, and the prize money has been raised £7OO. No race is worth less than £2OO, while the improvers' and maiden classes have been increased substantially. The I programme is a varied one, and an ex-
