SUMMER SPORTS AT LEESTON

BOWLS, TENNIS, AND CROQUET CLUB ■ i Mr J. R. Jackson presided at the annual meeting of the Leeston Bowl- : ing. Tennis, and Croquet Club. The ; report recorded an improved financial position, although the expenses had been unusually heavy. : Officers elected were:—Patron. Mr W. Johnston; president, Mr L. J. ; Walker; vice-presidents, Messrs H. D. Jones, R. H. Ford, and Dr. W. G. Volckman; secretary and treasurer, Mr ' J. A. Scott; auditor, Mr V. G. Mason; executive, Mrs F. B. Clausen and Messrs E. C. Maindonald, J. A. Creagh, : R. G. Newton, J. R. Jackson, and F. V. Gwalkin. The subscriptions and general levy were left as last year and October 9 was chosen as opening day. Ten new members were elected to the tennis section and two to the bowling. In appreciation of their services to the club and over a long period Mr and Mrs S. Johnston were elected honorary life members. School Committee A monthly meeting of the Leeston School Committee was presided over by Mr D. J. Ridden. The secretary of the Canterbury Education Board forwarded a copy of a resolution complimenting the committee on its good work about a tree-planting scheme undertaken on a reserve acquired from the Ellesmere County Council. Mr J. U. Patterson was thanked for carting tools and equipment for the tree planting, the headmaster for taking the

senior pupils on a hiking trip over Cashmere Hills, Mr D. H. Reid for supplying milk free of cost for the chilren's cocoa in the winter, and Mr Free for ploughing the school section. The use of the school buildings was granted to the Canterbury Methodist Young Women's Bible Class Union for its Easter camp. I Missionary Union There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Leeston branch of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union, over which Mrs D. N. Pryor presided. Information about a women's world-wide day of prayer was received, and it was decided to seek the support of women's organisations attached- to other churches in the forming of a branch at Leeston. The study was devoted to China, and two interesting missionary letters were I read by Mrs Ormandy and Miss E. | McLaughlin. A paper on "A Day in the Life of a Missionary's Wife in China" was read by Mrs W. O. Rennie. KAIKOURA The weekly meeting of the Kaikoura branch of the Workers' Education Association was held at "Langley," the residence of Mr and Mrs R. T. Pope. The subject for the evening was the music of Elgar. Mr W. McD. Baker was the leader. Personal Mr and Mrs D. Alexander (Christchurch) are visiting Kaikoura as guests of Mr and Mrs T. Alexander. Mr E. J. Williams left Kaikoura on Thursday for a holiday in the south. Miss Melva Jones (Rangiora) is the guest of her relatives, Mr and Mrs R. T. Pope, "Langley," Ludstone terrace, Kaikoura. ,

Personal Mr R. A. B. Kingsbury, of Culverden, has returned to New Zealand after a six weeks' tour of New South Wales and Queensland. LAKESIDE TENNIS CLUB In the absence of the president (Mr H. G. Fincham), who is ill, Mr H. Schnelle presided at the annual meeting of the Lakeside Tennis Club. Sympathy was extended to the relatives of Mesdames C. H. Morton and W. J.
