RANGIORA COUNTY COUNCIL

SHARE OF NEW ASHLEY BRIDGE COST An application will be made by the Rangiora County Council for a reduction in the amount of £1025 fixed by the Main Highways Board as the council's full contribution toward the cost of the new bridge over the Ashley river on the main north road. This decision was made at the council's meeting yesterday morning, at which the chairman (Mr H. Tallott) presided. There were also present Crs. C. Rands, G. H. King, J. Brosnan, R. Macdonald, W. Smith, and F. S. Young. As an alternative to a reduction, the council decided to arrange with the board to pay by way of a loan from the board, the term to be five years, and the first payment to be made in the next financial year. A legal opinion on several aspects of the public cemetery question was received irom the 'New Zealand Counties! Association. It stated that the closing of existing denominational cemeteries because of the provision of a new public one, rested with the Governor-General. In the event of the closing of existing cemeteries, burials would be discontinued there, but owners of plots would be entitled to plots in the new cemetery if they applied for them within two years of the opening of the new site. The future maintenance of the closed cemeteries would be in the hands of the organisation named in the order. In his report, the foreman (Mr C. L. Dalzell) said that because of wet weather, roads generally had suffered and fine weather was required for roading work. One plantation was replanted with 900 trees. Traffic tallies were being taken at Bennetts and at the Cam Mill corner. The financial statement showed a debit balance of £2029 8s lid. Receipts during August totalled £1344 16s 4d, and payments £772 3s 6d. At a special meeting which followed, the council received the audited balance-sheet from the Government Auditor and congratulated the clerk (Mr A. G. Dalley) on- its satisfactory state. Elderly Man Injured With a dislocated thigh, suffered when he slipped and fell at his home in Church street, Rangiora, Anthony Barber, an elderly man, was taken to the Christchurch Public Hospital yesterday morning. Barber is a retired labourer. Progress League Grant "I thought that the league had forgotten about us," said Cr. C. Rands at the meeting the Rangiora County Council yesterday, when a letter was ! received from the Canterbury Progress League asking for increased financial support and outlining its activities in the interests of Canterbury. Cr. Rands asked what had been done about the clearing of willows in the Cust valley to prevent flooding in the river—work suggested as suitable to absorb unemployed labour, and promised the support of the league by its organiser (Mr P. R. Climie), when he attended a meeting of the council some time ago. Members of the council agreed that the league had not given it the assistance expected and favoured a reduction rather than an increase in the council's annual grant. However, it was stated that members realised that the league had commitments and relied on local bodies for financial support. It was decided to make the usual grant of £2O, but to express the council's disappointment that more assistance had not been given to the council. "There are many things on which the money could be better spent," commented Cr. F. S. Young. It was decided that the chairman (Mr H. Tallott), the county clerk (Mr S. G. Dalley), and Mr R. Mclntyre, engineer in charge of the Ashley river protective scheme, should interview Mr F. Langbein, district Public Works engineer, with the object of having the work carried out by Maori relief labour. The new drain will go through a half-chain drain reserve on native land and an estimate of the total cost of the job is £3OO.
