BRISK BATTING AGAINST FAST ATTACK MR LEVESON-GOWER»S TEAM LOSES FIVE WICKETS (imU'KD PBEB3 ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.) (Received September 10, 11 a.m.) SCARBOROUGH, September 9. New Zealand made 285 in reply to 380 scored by Mr H. G. D. LevesonGower's eleven. \ The speed attack of Gover, Nichols, and Wellard set the tourists a difficult task on a hard, fast wicket, ; and five men were out for 150, four ' being caught by the wicket-keeper 1 or in the slips off snicks. Hadlee was in top form, driving powerfully. His score included six fours and one six. The New Zealanders batted ' briskly, scoring much faster than . the opposing team did yesterday. ■ Moloney hit four fours in a brief, , bright innings. Donnelly was also i enterprising. Weir was confident and aggressive at a difficult time. He : hit eight fours. ; Eight wickets were down for 204. Then Lowry and Cowie smote the pace bowlers, in spite of the new ball, adding 74. Cowie chose an opportune time to knock up his highest r score of the tour. He hit at almost every ball, scoring seven fours. Lowry kept pace in a partnership which lasted only half an hour. New Zealand then accomplished a fine performance in dismissing five batsmen. Brilliant fielding added to the deadliness of the bowling. Kerr < made a good catch at square-leg. Cowie was responsible for a spectacular one-handed effort at mid-off; Roberts made a good running catch near the sight screen; and Gallichan held a cannon-ball return from Hardstaff. Gallichan bowled a disconcerting ball of teasing length and varied flight. The attendance was again good, approximately 10,000. i Scores: —

Bowling—Gover, three for 83; Wellird, four for 55; Brown,'three for 85; Nichols, none for 39.
