Favourites Fall Backers suffered a severe reverse in the Hunters’ Steeplechase. The favourite, Croyden, fell at the first fence, and the second favourite. Platter, lost his rider at the same fence after going once round. This pair carried the bulk of the money, and the subsequent victory of Ruenzori was attended by a substantial dividend. The second horse, AcrOn, also paid a good price Ruenzori was in front practically throughout. Starmond, Tambo, Bimbo, and Acron followed him in the running, but Tambo came to grief, and over the final stages Acron made the best showing against the leader. Ruenzori, however, never looked like losing. Starmond was a very poor third, and Bimbo fourth. The winner, who is an aged gelding, has frequently shown pace on the flat. The race, however, was spoiled by the mishaps. Maiden’s Good Effort The maiden favourite Relative failed to get away well, and was always in the ruck. The winner, Florence Mills, was responsible for a good-class effort. She was very slow to begin, being second to last away, but she ran up fast out of the back stretch, Final and Amoroso cutting out the pace together ahead of Sigurd, Seaham, Civil, Aureus, Great Memory, and Gay Hunting. Seaham moved up to the front fast on the turn, and was with Final and Amoroso, Sigurd being very handy with Great Memory, while Florence Mills had also become prominent. Final and Sigurd came on well in the straight, but Florence Mills, getting a clear run through on the rails, finished strongly to win by a length and a half. Sigurd just failed to reach Final, with Great Memory handy, then Amoroso and Gay Hunting. The winner, a three-year-old filly by Nigger Minstrel from a sister to the Auckland Cup winner Motere, registered an outstanding performance. Final ran a good race, but hung badly on the turn. Sigurd ran well and is sure to improve. Great Memory, Amoroso, Gay Hunting, Aureus, and Seaham all showed pace. Good Jumping Donegal was a slightly better favourite than Trackman for the hurdles, but found the latter just a trifle
