COUNTY COUNCILS

CHEVIOT Those present at the August meeting of the Cheviot County Council were Crs. J. Paton (chairman), N. Wilkinson, F, de Lambert, D. McLaren, G. Rutherford, and W. L. Foster. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr W. K. McAlpine • was passed, members standing in silence. , The New Zealand Counties’ Association forwarded the agenda for _the forthcoming conference to be held in Wellington. It was decided to appoint Cr. de Lambert the council s delegate to the conference. The Treasury, Wellington, forwarded a Gazette notice embodying the Governor-General’s consent to the council’s raising the Cheviot County bridges and culverts loan of £15,000. It was decided to proceed with the raising of the loan and to place the matter of raising it in the hands of ; the county solicitors. It was resolved to grant the St. John Ambulance Association the sum of £5 ss. Several ratepayers living on Stonyhurst road requested the council to construct a drain along the road to deal with floodwaters which occasionally escaped from the stream near Messrs Ensor Bros.’ gate and flowed down the road. The settlers feared that the recently-completed new formation at this point would be eroded by future floods if some remedial action was not taken. The engineer was asked to furnish a report on the matter. The Marine Department asked the council to nominate a successor on the Lyttelton Harbour Board to Mr W- K. McAlpine. It was decided to confer with the other counties in the combined district regarding the appointment. A motion was passed in accordance with notice given that rates be levied as follows (la?t year’s figures in parenthesis): General rate 45-64 din £ (3d), hospital rate 13-32 din £ (3d), Hurunui bridge rate, l-64d in £ ( —), bridges and culverts loan l-32d in £ (—). • It was decided to, approve the plans prepared by the engineer for the Ben Cruachan deviation on the LeaderWaiau highway, and to forward them to the Main Highways Board for examination. The engineer was directed to prepare plans for the Leamington river bridge (Fitzpatrick’s), the Lowry stream culvert, and Royal stream bridge in that order. Construction of a further groyne at Kaiwaia creek diversion was also authorised. Accounts amounting to £Bl9 17s 4d were passed for payment. KAIKOURA The monthly meeting of the Kaikoura County Council was held on Friday in the Council Chambers. Those present were: Councillors E. H. Eccles, P. S. Humm, T. Alexander, A. Howard, B. J. Mackle, E. C. Latter, G. D. Smith, and L. P. Blunt. Councillor E. H. Eccles acted as chairman. A letter of sympathy was sent to Mr E. P. Meachen, M.P., in the death of his mother, those present standing in silence as a mark of respect. A letter of sympathy was also sent to the county chairman, Mr F. J. Monk, in his illness. The South Islands Travel Association advised' that its 64 page illustrated book, covering the South Island was in preparation, and asked the council for assistance as it would give the various South Island pleasure resorts publicity. It was decided to contribute £5 towards the book, provided that £2O could be collected from the hotels in the district.

The Marlborough Progress League, in advising of the change in the boundaries in the Wairau electorate, stated that it had, been strongly represented that the name of the electorate, be changed to Marlborough, the main reasons being that it would be more descriptive of its actual geographical position. The league strongly favoured the change, and asked for the co-opera-tion of the council in the matter. The council decided to fall in with the suggestion. The No. 14 District Highways Council advised that the Highways Board had delegated to the council powers to make by-laws for the regulation of traffic in the township area. Arbor Day

It was remarked that, the early settlers had planted trees and suggested that trees be planted in the Takahanga Domain in conjunction with the school children, on August 11, the day advised by the Minister for Internal Affairs. The electrical engineer gave an estimate of the cost of extending the electric light service along Beach road at £399 10s 6d. It was agreed to apply for authority to raise the necessary loan to carry out the work. The following amounts were passed for payment:—General account, £1047, 16s 3d; electric account, £240 Is 6*5.
