WRESTLING

M'CREADY V. SPELLMAN

Two men who have distinguished themselves on both the professional and amateur sides of wrestling will meet in the bout which is to be staged in Christchurch next Wednesday night. In one corner will be Earl McCready, British Empire amateur and professional champion, and a prominent performer at the Olympic Games at in 1928, and, in the other corner, John Spellman, who was in the finals of the American amateur heavy-weight championships for three successive years, winning the title in 1924, the year in which he was the cruiserweight Olympic champion at Paris. Both men are highly experienced wrestlers, and there is not much about any phase of the game that they have not mastered. It is generally recognised that, in spite of the hard luck which McCready had in his recent title bout with Dean Detton, the Canadian's claims to the world championship cannot be denied much longer. He has shown New Zealanders over and over again that he has the stuff that goes to the making of a champion, and his record in this country is something that would befit any champion. Spellman, the "iron man of wrestling," never seems to be at a lobs for something to suit every occasion, and his ability to get his opponents into difficulties is equalled only by his cleverness in extricating himself from trouble.
