Mr R. B. Tennent, Director of the Fields Division of the Department of Agriculture, arrived by the steamer express from Wellington yesterday. Mr E. T. Spidy, Superintendent of the Railway Workshops, arrived from the north yesterday. Dr. D. E. Hansen, principal of the Christchurch Technical College, returned by the steamer express from the north yesterday. Dr. J. Connor, of Ashburton, arrived from the north yesterday. Mr C. C. Holland arrived from Wellington yesterday. Mr W. Blundell arrived from the north yesterday. Mr W. J. Mountjoy, secretary of the Wellington Employers' Association, has returned to the North Island. Mr F. Langbein was re-elected chairman of the No. 13 District Highways Council at the annual meeting of the council yesterday. Mr C. L. Carr, M.P., left for Wellington last evening. The Hon. T. F. Doyle, M.L.C., and the Hon. F. Waite, M.L.C., left for Wellington last evening. Mr E. J. Ward was appointed manager of the Presbyterian Book Room at a meeting of the Presbyterian Book Room committee last evening. Captain C. Vandenbergh has been appointed manager of the Wellington Waterside Labour Bureau, and Captain Mariner Holm has been appointed manager of the Auckland Waterside Labour Bureau. Captain Holm is a younger brother of v Captain S. Holm, general manager of the Holm shipping line. He is a well-known coastal shipmaster, and until recently was in command of the Port Whangarei. Major J. R. Kirk, M.8.E., chairman of the Soldiers' Civil Re-establishment League, has informed the league that, because of his intended departure for South Africa, he will be compelled to relinquish his chairmanship. The league has received a letter from the Minister for Defence (the Hon. F. Jones) expressing appreciation of Major Kirk's services. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr F. G. Wallburton was passed at the meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Rueby Union last evening. The president (Dr. W. S. Seed) said that Mr Wallburton had been secretary of the Merivale Club, treasurer to the Canterbury Rueby Union for some years, and Canterbury delegate to the New Zealand Rugby Union. He had given valuable service to both Rugby football and cricket. Mr E. Eggleston, Government District Valuer, was elected chairman of the Canterbury Provincial Conference of Valuers in Christchurch yesterday. The conference, which is under the ausoices of the New Zealand Government Valuers' Institute, will be continued to-dav. when the Valuer-General, Mr W. Stewart, will be present.
