An area of 30,000 acres has been added to what may be termed the subterranean clover belt of Hawke's Bay as a result of sowing operations which have been carried out this autumn. This figure easily breaks all records, and is held to indicate clearly that a rapidly increasing band of farmers, especially those on the lighter soils, is recognising the very great value of this legume in the programme of pasture establishment and stock development. The installation of an improved drainage system for the playing fields in Barrington Park has been completed, and the Superintendent of City Parks and Reserves (Mr M. J. Barnett) believes that the grounds will be in a reasonably good condition for sports during the wet periods of the year. A considerable amount of turf in the low-lying depressions in the playing fields has been lifted, the soil brought up to the general level, and the turf relaid. There is still a good deal of this work to be done, and it will be attended to as soon as possible. An endeavour to obtain assistance for former Imperial soldiers now living in • New Zealand will be made by the Ven. Archdeacon J. A. Jermyn, of Trinity Church, Greymouth, when he visits Great Britain to attend the conference on faith and order at Edinburgh. This was announced by Mr A.,H. McKane, of the Greymouth branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, at a gathering of farewell to Archdeacon Jermyn. at Greymouth.
