NEW ZEALANDERS' GOOD START

Derbyshire Dismissed For 241 FINE SHOWING AGAINST STRONG COUNTY SIDE ITOTTED PBESS ASSOCIATION—COPTBIOHT.) (Received June 6, 8.30 p.m.) LONDON, June 5. The New Zealand cricketers accomplished a creditable performance in dismissing Derbyshire in four hours on a good wicket. Derbyshire was the champion county last year and is sixth on the table this year. The weather was fine. The Derbyshire team included Townsend, Alderman, Smith, Worthington, Mitchell, and Copson, all of whom have coached or toured in the Dominion. The home side scored quickly before lunch, but in the afternoon the bowlers were predominant. Cowie, who took an early wicket with a ball that swung away, had another of his "purple patches," capturing three wickets for one run in four overs, including a good catch on the j leg side by the wicket-keeper. ! Page showed shrewdness in his slow to medium pace bowling. His victims were leading batsmen. Vivian cleverly flighted slow balls into the breeze, showing his most impressive form of the tour. Four or five wickets would not have been a flattering reward for him. A troublesome partnership at the eighth wicket was broken by a typically swift throw-in by Wallace. A crowd of 5000 saw the visitors troubled by probably the strongest county attack in England. Kerr batted patiently and Wallace brightly, but all the players appeared uncertain of the break bowling of Mitchell, until the advent of Page, who looked as if he might have saved the situation if only he had found a partner to stay with him. DECLARATION FAILS DRAWN MATCH AGAINST NORTHANTS HOME BATSMEN PLAY OUT TIME LONDON, June 4. Declaring in their second innings with 280 on the board for four and having a lead of 149 on the first innings, New Zealand appeared to be certain of a win against Northamptonshire, The county team, however, collared the New Zealanders' bowling as it had not been collared before on the tour and ran up 308 for four in quick time. Denis Brookes, a young professional, 21 years of age, finished up with 102 not out. The perfect wicket helped the county to play out time, and the match was drawn. New Zealand resumed their second innings in fine but uncertain weather, with three down for 230. Page and Carson continued their overnight partnership till Carson was caught at mid-off. The pair added 110 for the fourth wicket in 80 minutes. The left-handers display lasted two hours and included eight fours, with some very strong leg hits. . \, The innings was immediately declared, leaving the county over five hours to bat. This they did with the loss of four wickets. New Zealand employed eight bowlers in an unavailing effort to dislodge the batsmen, who all played well on the hard, true wicket. The attack lacked wicket-taking venom, and the absence of a slow leg-break bowler was also severely Roberts; Dunning, and Gallichan were comparatively inexpensive, but the batsmen seldom appeared troubled. • Nelson, a Cambridge Blue who is qualifying for the county, played a dour innings, and Brookes, a young professional, gave the best display of his career in making a century. Timms, perhaps the county's best batsmap, was also very sound. It was disappointing that the tourists were unable to force a win, but the conditions were certainly made for the batsmen.
