OPENING OF LINKS OFFICERS ELECTED FOR NEW CLUB Another 200 acres was added to the area given to golf in and around Christchurch yesterday with the opening of play over a temporary course of 13 holes at the new links of the Waitikiri Club in Bottle Lake road, Burwood. Surrounded by fine plantations sheltering it from the wind, and with a great sweep of undulating country for the two courses planned, the links will provide an attractive golfing spot. A permanent course is at present under construction, and when it is completed an inner and an outer course will be available. Shareholders of the company and their friends were entertained at afternoon tea by the chairman of directors, Mr A. R. Blank, who predicted a great future for the club. Mr S. G. Holland, a shareholder in the company, also spoke congratulating the directors on the rapid progress made in the building of the links. After the formation of the club had been moved and seconded, the following officers were elected:—President, Mr F. Cracroft Wilson; vice-presidents, Messrs R. E. McDougall, W. H. Sedgley, Dr. W. H. Simpson: club captain, Mr Blank; secre-tary-treasurer, Mr R. J. Hobbs; committee, Dr. J. E. K. Brown. Messrs O. A. Y Johnston, L. Le Cren, D. Glanville, W. H. Morrison; women's committee, Mesdames A. C. McKillop, G. Hamilton, Misses Halmai Loughnan, Theresa Ward, Helen Buchanan, Janet Stevenson. A mixed Canadian foursome played during the afternoon was won by I. M. Godby and Miss Buchanan, the trophies being presented by Mr Cracroft Wilson. A mixed foursome played at the Waitikiri links yesterday afternoon resulted: I. M. Godby and Miss H. Buchanan, 51. 3—48; Miss L. Thomson and B. G. Donovan, 60, 11—49; L. J. Le Cren and Miss T Ward, 58, 9—49; M. R. Blank and Mrs Blank. 56, 7—49; M. Armstrong and Mrs Armstrong, 60, 9—51; A. B. Hobbs and Mrs Hobbs. 59. 8—51; I. D. Wood and Mrs G. Cotterill, 60, 8—52; C. A. Rattray and Mrs G. Hamilton, 59, 8—51; A. C. McKillop and Mrs McKillop, 57, 5—52; G. H. Wood and Mrs Wood, 63. 9—54; C. J Ward and Miss Stevenson, 58, 1—57; G S. Rees and Mrs Bates, 65, 7—58; R. M. Morrow and Miss N. Firth, 68, 9—59. The Course Although the temporary course of 13 holes which has been laid down at Waitikiri is scarcely a criterion of the two courses of 18 holes each which will be completed probably within the next year, it is sufficiently difficult and unorthodox to try even experienced golfers. Playing the 13 holes and repeating the first five brings the bogey score to 63 for a total length of 4600 yards. At present there hns not been time for the construction of adequate bunkers on most of the fairways; but the lay-out penalises the player who hooks, and is more lenient to the slice, for the course is set clockwise with the boundary fence on the left. The greens are small and the grass young, while the fairways are wide and well surfaced. With 200 acres of land the course has ample room for developments; and the two courses, which will be made, will be 6700 and 6000.yards, the bogey for each being about 72. The temporary holes are fairly short. The first follows the boundary fence east, its length being 375 yards (bogey 4). The second is 240 yards (bogey 4), and follows the boundary fence south. A bogey 3 makes the third hole tricky, for the fairway runs parallel to a ploughed paddock. The fourth (bogey 4), ' fifth (bogey 4), and sixth (bogey 3), of 340 yards, 330 yards, and 165 yards respectively, are all placed in the middle of the course and the fairways are spacious. The seventh is at present in the midst of the ploughed area, but the remaining holes are skilfully placed to make use of the natural features of the land. These, too, are short and untrapped. The lengths are:—Seven, bogey 3, 146 yards; 8, bogey 3, 196 yards; 9, bogey 4, 269 yards; 10, bogey 3, 206 yards; 11, bogey 3, 125 yards; 12, bogey 3, 116 yards; 13, bogey 3, 208 yards. The surrounding is ideal for the belts of trees provide protection from the wind. To make up for the deficiency of bunkers and hazards, a number of the greens are "camel-backed" and require accuracy of play for scores to be consistently low. RUSSLEY CLUB The first qualifying round of the Lindsay Russell Cup was played on Saturday, when a piercing southerly wind blew all the afternoon, and this accounted for the poor scoring.
