NEW ZEALAND INSTITUTE OF HORTICULTURE
EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETS The following were present at the monthly meeting of the Executive Council of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture (Inc.). which was held at Wellington recently:—Messrs F. S. Popp (president), Campbell. Waugh. Mason. Poole, Hyde, and G. S. Nicoll (Dominion secretary). Condolence was directed to be conveyed to the relatives of Mr E. Phillips Turner, a member of the executive council", who had always been keenly interested in the institute's activities and who had given invaluable assistance in forestry matters. Congratulations were directed to be conveyed to Sir Algernon Thomas, K.C.M.G., Auckland, an honorary fellow of the institute, on his knighthood. Appreciation was expressed oi the inauguration, by the Otago District Council, of lectures in horticultural science. On the recommendation of the examining board, the Cockayne gold medal was awarded to Mr R. W. Balch, of Christchurch, as the best diploma candidate at the 1936 examination. An increase of capitation to district councils from 20 to 30 per cent, was approved.
