ACCIDENTS IN ELEVEN WEEKS
COMPARISON WITH SHELLING OF ALMERIA (PISSS A.SSOCIITION TKUEGSIH.) WELLINGTON, June 5. In releasing the road accident figures throughout the Dominion for the last 11 weeks, the Minister for Transport (the Hon. R. .Semple) drew attention to a comparison with the casualties caused by the shelling of Almeria. "But no one apparently was shocked at all," added Mr Semple. The Almeria casualties were 36 killed. 65 wounded, and 100 missing, while the New Zealand road accident figures from March 15 to May 31, numbered 514 accidents involving 701 victims, of whom 32 were killed. 90 seriously injured, and 579 slightlv injured. Mr Semple also mentioned the number of unlicensed drivers involved in accidents, and stated that no fewer than 41 drivers out of a total of 680 involved were found not to have driving licences. The table prepared by the department showing the relative accident hazard according to type of vehicle gives •the following number of vehicles involved in accidents for each 1 000.000 miles of running:—Motor-cycles 6.5. private cars 2.4. commercial vehicles 1.3. taxis 4.3. service cars and buses 1.3. rental cars 8.3.
