WOMEN’S DIVISION OF FARMERS’ UNION
* NORTH CANTERBURY PROVINCIAL EXECUTIVE Mrs Colin Mclntosh presided over a good attendance at a meeting of the North Canterbury Provincial Executive of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Thirty-one branches were represented. It was decided to send letters of congratulation to Mrs C. K. Wilson (Dominion president) and Mrs W. H. Ward, past Dominion president, who received Coronation honours. _ Pleasure was expressed that a junior branch had been formed at Harewood. Suggested remits for the Dominion conference were discussed extensively. Mrs H. D. Hall reported that she had attended the annual meeting of the Crippled Children Society, and reminded members that subscriptions were now due, and appealed for new members. Mr D. V. Wilson, chairman of the New Zealand Industries Fair, attended and explained the position regarding the bays which the Women’s Division had agreed to have at the fair. He explained the need for the wholehearted co-opcration of country people in order to make the fair a success, and answered many questions that showed that members were enthusiastic in their desire to make the bays representative of country life and pursuits. OXFORD The Oxford branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union celebrated its fourth birthday recently, when members and their friends spent a most enjoyable evening. Members of the Oxford Farmers’ Union and Young Farmers’ Club, Cust-West Eyreton Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, Farmers’ Union, and Young Farmers’ Club, and Viewhill Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union were also present, and conveyed the congratulations and good wishes of their resoective unions. The first two hours were set aside for the playing of euchre and 500, after which Mrs H. C. D. Somerset presented the play entitled “Peace In Our Time.” . A buffet supper was then served m the Agricultural and Pastoral Hall, which was gay with multi-coloured flowers. A special feature of the evening was the tastefully decorated birthday cake, given and cut by the president. Mrs P. K. Thompson. The four candles were lit by the provincial president, Mrs C. Mclntosh, and extinguished by Mrs W. Higginson, who made the cake. Mrs Thompson was presented with a posy by Miss R. Skurr. Mrs Mclntosh and Mrs Somerset were also the recipients of bouquets in appreciation of their services, HAREWOOD BRANCH The June meeting of the Harewood branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Highsted Road Hall. Mrs N. A. Fraser presided over a good attendance, and Mrs Housten. a new member, was welcomed. During the month members assisted Miss Maud McConnell in the forming of the Harewood junior branch of the division. Members had also visited Lincoln College and Sir R. Heaton Rhodes’s home, "Otahuna.” The roll-call “improvement of meetings.” ras responsible for several helpful suggestions. Competitions resulted as follows: — Prettiest cup and saucer, Mrs A. C. Orchard 1, Mrs E. Smith 2; vase of flowers. Mrs A. C. Orchard 1. Mrs A* Syme 2; single bloom. Mrs W. Hayton and Mrs A. C. Orchard (equal) 1, Mrs J. King 3. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames J. Rowberry, L. C. Sisson, and A. E. Watson.
