♦ ESTIMATES FOR ROADING DISCUSSED Those present at the monthly meeting of the Ashley County Council were Councillors H. G. Philpott (chairman), T. Pulley, G. Croft, E. Percy, J. D. McCracken, and J. W. Ensor. £ A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr D. Ryall, whose death occurred recently, was carried. The chairman stated that the committee set up to consider the highways estimates for the current year had completed and forwarded its decisions to the board’s representative. The maintenance claims were similar to those of last year except that of the Rangiora-Oxford highway, where increases were made to meet the cost of improvements by piping several open watercourses and the erection of a flat-top culvert over a watercourse near the Washpool. Allowances had also been made for river protective works at the approach to the Okuku bridge, for the resealing of the surface of the bridge, and for the council’s share of the costs of repairs to the Ashley Gorge bridge, which would be repaired by the Oxford County Council, On the Ashley Gorge highway extra expenditure would he incurred in river protective works at Gillespie’s bridge, and on the Loburn-White-rock highway allowance had been made for repairs to the decking hf the Grey bridge, and for the straightening of a bend in the Whiterock district. The Highways Board representative wrote approving of the council’s proposals for a protective groyne at Gillespie’s bridge, Lees Valley. The supervisor reported that the work had been begun. The Highways Board representative also advised that all local authorities were requested to have classification signs erected and properly displayed on highways. The clerk was directed to obtain the necessary signs. The District Engineer advised that the Minister for Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) was considering a five-year plan for the metalling of settlement roads and had asked to be supplied with particulars of every unmetalled road in the Dominion giving access to genuine settlers. The clerk was directed to prepare a return giving particulars of Dobsons, Yaxleys, Mowatt’s. Reserve, and the Mile roads. Cr. McCracken and the clerk were appointed to represent the council at the conference of the New Zealand Counties’ Association. The council unanimously supported the resolution forwarded by the Makara County Council: “That the proposed legislation making provision for the amalgamation of local bodies be amended to provide for a poll of the ratepayers before the legislation is proceeded with.” Complaints were received of the
