KING GEORGE V MEMORIAL

PROVISIONAL TOTAL OF £140,000 MR FRASER GRATIFIED BY RESPONSE “HEALTH FOR THOUSANDS OF CHILDREN” <PBESa ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, June 4. A provisional total of £140,000 in contributions to the King George V National Memorial Fund for the establishment of children’s permanent health camps in New Zealand was announced by the Acting-Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser) to-night. This sum includes the original contribution from the Government of £25.000, and its pound-for-pound subsidy after the fund had reachet, £50.000. This means that the public, apart from the Government, has subscribed £70,000. Mr Fraser said there were amounts still outstanding, but the tentative total indicated was a magnificent response of the people of Now Zealand. The Minister said the public subscriptions exceeded the most optimistic expectations. He was Ijarticularly impressed by the magnificent manner in which the appeal had been supported by individual citizens. “Every national organisation, public or private, every local authority,_ and every local institution has enthusiastically supported the fund.” said Mr Fraser, “and I wish to offer the sincerest thanks of the Government for the wonderful response that has been forthcoming. Particularly do I wish to thank those local bodies, which, on top of local appeals, have risen to the occasion in this national effort. So widespread has been the response of individual citizens, either in donations or in subscriptions to street appeals, that I do not think it an exaggeration to say that every home in the Dominion has played its part in swelling the fund. That fact, alone, shows the national character of the fund. When the final result is known. I am confident the people of New Zealand will have worthily shown their appreciation of the life of the great King and their deep and abiding humanitarian instincts. The wonderful response will mean health and happiness for thousands of children in every generation to come.” GROWTH OF FUND IN CITY CONTRIBUTIONS MADE YESTERDAY TOTAL REACHES £7714 The total of the contributions in Christchurch to the King George V Memorial Fund rose yesterday to £7714 10s 7d. It is estimated by the committee organising the appeal that many contributions are still outstanding, in particular those from employees of city firms. To these firms and to women’s organisations in the city about 1600 collection lists were sent at the beginning of the appeal, and to date only a small proportion has been received by the City Treasurer (Mr J. W. Niven). The return of these lists was discussed by the committee at a meeting yesterday, and the hope was expressed that every firm would give its employees an opportunity to contribute before June 8. After this date the committee will begin the collection of all lists that have not been returned.
