U.S. STEEL PLANT BESIEGED
STRIKERS CUT OFF SUPPLIES AEROPLANES CRASH WHEN DROPPING FOOD SHERIFF'S PARTY SEARCH FOR SNIPERS (VSIIX.B PBE33 ASSOCIATION —COPTEIGHT.) (Received June 3, 10 p.m.) YOUNGSTOWN (Ohio), June 3. After two aeroplanes belonging to the Republic Steel Corporation had crashed without their occupants being injured, the corporation announced that it would discontinue the use of aeroplanes to drop food to the strike-besieged plant. It is alleged that a sniper's bullet severed a strut over the head of one pilot. The sheriff and deputies are hunting for snipers in the underbrush near the plant. The strikers surrounding the plant refused to permit food to be sent to those working inside. Therefore the corporation used aeroplanes for the purpose. [Five persons were killed and 60 wounded in a clash between the police and striking employees of the Republic Steel Corporation on May 30. The dispute which led to the strike was about recognition by the employers of a union affiliated to the Committee for Industrial Organisation. Pickets of strikers patrolled the works, preventing any communication between a number of workers inside and officials of the corporation outside.] STRIKERS' CLASH WITH POLICE BATONS AND TEAR GAS TO STOP RIOT SEVERAL PERSONS RECEIVE INJURIES (Received June 3, 11.30 p.m.) LITTLE FALLS (New Jersey), June 3. More than 20 persons were hurt, including several women, but none was seriously injured. A dozen motor-cars were damaged. The plant windows were smashed. The strike was fostered by the Committee for Industrial Organisation.
