ADDINGTON MARKET

STRONG MUTTON SALE OTHER SECTIONS EASIER After a series of heavy penning®, entries at the weekly stock sale yesterday were substantially smaller in practically all sections. There were only a few pens of store ewes, which sold draggingly. and wether lambs were back by up to 2s M a head. Forward wethers sold well. The small showing of fat lambs ® good demand from exporters. The fat sheep penning comprised a few less than 4000 head, about three-fifths of recent pennings, and there was a good, sound sale at better than last week’s rates. Exporters competed actively for weights suitable for the freezing trade. Fat cattle comprised a small entry, but there were still too many for the trade, and there was an easing of about 20s a head. In tiie case of specially attractive bodies the easing was not so pronounced. With the advance of winter much light quality is being penned. The continued scarcity of good wethers is the most noticeable feature of the fat stock market. STORE SHEEP The penning in the store sheep section was the smallest of the season. Lambs accounted for only 18 pens, and the lambs were unattractive. There were only a few pens of adult ewes. These met with a set-back of from 2s to 3s a head. A small, pen of ewe lambs made 265, one line of 173 wether lambs 14s, and another of 235 12s. For the few pens of ewes there was also a relapse, but forward wethers maintained values fairly well. A line of 263 wethers from Double Hill realised 26s 6d. another of 259 from Glcnrock 26s sd, and other lines aggregating several hundred head from 20s to 25s 4d. The passings of both lambs and ewes were numerous, the sale tor these being dispirited from the small circle of buyers present. FAT LAMBS The lamb entry totalled only about 900 head, compared with 2000 head last week. Quality, if anything, was worse than last week's, and really prime lambs were few and far between. The butchers’ demand for lamb is slackening off now. Good quality lambs were bought for export at a shade over schedule, and retail buyers kept, the market firm. Other sorts sold draggingly. The best price was 35s Id, whicli was shared by a number of vendors. A notable sale was that on account of W. A. Sheat (Westerfield). whose 30 lambs ranged between 32s Id and 35s Id. Several pens of lambs came from the West Coast. Values were as under:— Pyne. Gould, Guinness, Ltd., sold:—On account of W. A. Sheat (Westerfield), 30 at 32s Id to 35s Id: W. FAT SHEEP The entry In the fat sheep section was smaller than it has been for some sales. Included were some good lines from South Canterbury, and there were some good drafts of ewes from nearer districts, but otherwise a fair amount of very Indifferent quality was forward, many of the wethers not being finished. There was a distinct shortage of good wethers, and these sold spiritedly from the outset at up to Is 6d advance. Butchers were unable to fill their wants with wethers, and over the latter part of the sale, as a result, there was a sharp advance for ewes, equalling up to 2s a head. Exporters were more actively in the market for ewes on account of the lack of supplies in the fat lamb pens, and this helped to keep lighter ewes at the maximum schedule rates, and a shade more In cases. Butchers were prepared to buy ahead in view of the holiday sale next Tuesday, but were unable to do so. It would seem that fatteners will have a good market next week, as butchers are very bare of supplies. Amongst some of the outstanding prices was a pen of five wethers sold by W. Abbott (Southbrldge) at 41s Id, and another of 15 at 40s lOd, from S. Mackenzie (Tlmaru). A pen of 14 ewes from T. D. Jarman (Hororata) sold at 30s 4d. FAT CATTLE The entry in the fat cattle pens totalled 540 head, compared with 525 last week. There was again a great proportldn of indifferent quality cows and steers in the yarding. Outside cattle were reuresented. but by quite ordinary sorts. The overcrowding of the section for some weeks has enabled butchers to acquire their maximum requirements, and yesterday’s sale was slow and dragging from the outset Good beef, except in the case of a few especially attractive pens, was down by about 20s a head, and lighter sorts by 15s. Top price of the sale was £ls 17s 6d. A truck lot of eight three-year Shorthorn steers from Wyllle Bros. (Sefton) made £l3 2s 6d. Edmlston (Sprlngston), cow at £7 17s 6d. VEALERS The entry In the vealer pens was smaller. Large runners and heavyweights formed a bigger proportion of the penning, there being a distinct scarcity of prime handy-weight vealers. Values for heavy sorts were erratic, but on average last week’s values were barely maintained, with occasional instances of an improvement. For the pens of smaller

calves there was a keener demand. Values were as under:— . „„ Prime and heavy-weight runners to £6 18s 6d: extra to £8 Is. Heavy runners. £4 10s to £5 7s 6d. Medium runners. £3 to £4. Prime vealers. 55s to £3 15s. Medium vealers, 37s 6d to 50s. Small calves, 18s to 265. STORE CATTLE There was a fair-sized penning of cattle in the store section, the bulk being cows of varying ages and quality. However, for anything attractive there was a moderate demand, particularly for cows showing some breeding quality. in a number of cases up to £4ss. A pen of 11 Shorthorn cross steers sold at £7 18s 6d. and a pen of 20 months heifers at £6 8s 6d. DAIRY CATTLE The entry in the dairy section was veij much larger, comprising about 140 head. There was not so much good Quality as a week ago, and as a result there was a less spirited demand. Heifers were the most affected, and values for these were down by fully 30s a head. Good cows at the drop sold steadily, a quality cow selling at £ls. but inferior sorts met with a dragging demand. FAT PIGS There was a medium-sized penning In the pork section, but it consisted of much better quality than has been the case for some time. The sale commenced at prices In advance of those of last week, and showed very little variation throughout. Baconcrs were yarded in small numbers, but the smaller penning had no Influence on values, which were barely up to those of last week. Choppers were In fairly heavy supply, but prices remained firm at last week’s rates. Values were:— Light and unfinished porkers, 25s fed to 32s 6d. • Medium porkers. 36s fed to 41s 6d. Heavy porkers, 43s fed to 51s 6d. Average price per lb, fed to Old. Baconers, 49s fed to 57s fed. Medium baconers, £3 3s fed to £3 fls fed. Heavy baconers, £3 14s fed to £3 10s fed. Extra heavy baconers, £4 5s fed to £4 19s fed. Average price per lb, 5Jd to feid. STORE PIGS The entry was much smaller than that of last week. Prices for slips and stores showed very little change, whilst on the other hand good ouality weaners showed an advance on last week. Values were:— Weaners. small, 6s to Bs. Best weaners. 9s to 12s. Slips. 6s to 12s. Small stores, 13s to 14s. Medium stores. 16s to IBs. Large stores, 19s to 225. \ STORTFORD LODGE ' (muss ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) HASTINGS. June 2. An all-round advance in fat cattle was recorded at to-day’s stock sale at Stortford Lodge, when a comparatively small entry was yarded. With no sale next Wednesday because of the King’s Birthday, the demand was good at to-day's double market. With butchers competing strongly. With the exception of a few lines, the bulk of the offering was Inclined to plainness. Plain lines met quite a good inquiry, but did not show the same degree of Improvement as better finished weightier cattle. Bullocks were scarce, and only a handful suitable for butchering was on offer. Dairy sorts provided a substantial tail to the fat cattle sale, and realised up to £6. Firm prices were realised in the store sheep' market. Wethers showed an improvement and other lines sold firmly at late rates. Store cattle values were much on a parity with recent sales. The entry included some excellent quality lines. Young cattle and fat sheep sold strongly on a short market, all.lines appreciating iii value.
