WAR MEMORIAL
ARRANGEMENTS FOR UNVEILING PARADES OF FORCES AND RETURNED MEN Full arrangements have now been completed for the ceremony of unveiling the war memorial in the Cathedral grounds, which will be performed on June 9, the holiday observed in honour of the King’s Birthday, by Colonel S. C. P, Nicholls, D. 5.0., C.8.E., Officer Commanding the Southern Command. The unveiling will take place at approximately 11.50 a.m. The unveiling will be preceded by a service in the Cathedral, The memorial will be dedicated by Archbishop Julius, and the address will be given by Mr W. E. Leadley, president of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers’ Association. The Rev. F. T. Read will read the lesson. The service will be attended by a parade of returned soldiers and units of the military and naval forces and the Royal New Zealand Air Force. The military parade will leave Cranmer square at 10.25 a.m., and will march to the Cathedral by Kilmore, Victoria, and Colombo streets. The following units will parade: New Zealand Staff Corps, New Zealand Permanent Staff, Royal New Zealand Artillery, Royal New Zealand Air Force, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry, New Zealand Artillery (9th, 10th, and 16th Batteries), 3rd Field Company New Zealand Engineers, Southern Depot Corps of Signallers, Ist Battalion Canterbury Regiment, No. 3 Company New Zealand Army Service Corps, and 3rd Field Ambulance. ’ The parade of returned soldiers will fall in at the association’s clubrooms at 10.30 a.m., and will march to the Cathedral, where seats will be reserved for those taking part. Men are asked to wear mufti and medals. The association has also invited members of the Australian Imperial Forces Association, the Old Contemptibles’ Association, the Veterans’ Association, the Legion of Frontiersmen, representatives of the Red Cross Society, women war workers and nurses, and members of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the association to attend. It is hoped that it can bo arranged for a band to head the procession. After the service, the military, naval, and air force parade will form up on the pathway between the Cathedral and the memorial, and the returned soldiers on the west pavement. The guard of honour will be provided by the Christ’s College senior cadets. Colonel Nicholls will perform the unveiling ceremony, and "Last Post” will be sounded by the bugle band of the First Canterbury Regiment, after which Archbishop Julius will effer the prayer of dedication. TheHiymn, “Abide With Me,” will be played by the band of the First Canterbury Regiment, followed by the blessing, “Reveille” (by the regimental bugle banA), and the National Anthem. The military forces will then form up at the back of the Cathedral, and march back to the King Edward Barracks for dismissal. A large attendance is expected. At the Cathedral. 1200 seats are a-rCilable, and it is considered that they will all be filled. ____________________
