DESERTED FROM SHIP

STEWARDS' BOY CONVICTED (PRESS ASSOCIATION TKLXOBAH.) WELLINGTON, June 1. "I agree that there is quite an epidemic of desertion*, but I don't want to send a boy of 17 to gaol, especially when he is a British subject," said the Magistrate (Mr E. D, Mosley, S.M.), when John Leslie Jones, a stewards' boy, pleaded guilty to deserting from the steamer Trojan Star to-day. Mr Mosley said the problem was one of considerable difficulty. However, in view of the defendant's youth and his willingness to accept a position offered him on a farm, he would be convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called on within six months. , When ordered to pay 12s costs, Jones said his sole wealth was 2s. He was given 21 days to pay.
